(10,491 posts)It's not a carte blanche freedom to expose everything about you and every person you associate with.
They chose this figure, because that's what Bezos paid for the Post.

(4,533 posts)That is the source for the amount. Lin Wood is one of the attorneys. He represented Richard Jewel and the parents of Jon Benet Ramsey. He has a great track record and does not seem to file flimsy cases. The boy may win some money. Obviously not $250 million but maybe more than a million.

(10,491 posts)This feels like something that is going to end up being studied by First Amendment scholars someday.
What is the cost of exposure in a social media age?
In the 1970s, I'm not even sure this is a case, even if the Post defamed him, because I'm not sure what the damages could be. It would be forgotten in a week, and it's possible that the kid himself wouldn't even have been aware of the story unless someone mailed him a copy of the paper.
In 2019, this will literally follow him for the rest of his life.
Now, the curious question is whether that itself is even damaging considering he could probably start a GoFundMe and get $1 million for legal defenses before the week ends.
It's interesting.
(Note: None of this is a commentary on whether he, his parents, his fellow students, the dioscese, etc are good, bad or indifferent people).
