who could have maybe gotten a few more props. The nomination (and win) was for “writers Charlie Wachtel & David Rabinowitz and Kevin Willmott & Spike Lee.”

I realize that an Oscar win (any win, even tho not for best director or picture) was long overdue for Spike, and it was welcomed. But plenty of other amazing directors never won an Oscar, including Alfred freaking Hitchcock. Glen Close has been nominated six times and has never won either.

In the end, Oscars are pretty meaningless. Longevity of one’s work is a much better prize.

He didn't even get nominated for directing Malcolm X and it wasn't nominated for best picture, which was crazy.

There are many layers to it that speak both to history and the current situation here and globally and Spike Lee is brilliant at exploring these.

In an interview about the film, he said:

I try to hold a mirror up to what’s happening in the world and the truth as best I can, as I see it.

The full interview is well worth watching.
