17. The UMC will not ordain LGBTQ persons and our ministers

are prohibited from performing same sex marriage services. In some conferences, I have heard that the Bishops and District Superintendants sort of look the other way but I don't know if it is true.

If the UMC were not international this would have been settled long ago.. each time this is voted on, the vote is tighter. The African delegates vote as a block to keep the language as it is, and there are still enough other delegates floating around who are against it to keep things from changing on those two issues.

I think this may end up in a schism, just like a couple of other denominations have done.
There is a General Conference again in 2020 (this was a special one) so we will see what happens. I am not too hopeful as long as Africa is in the picture.

If a married gay couple joins a congregation however, they would be accepted as new members.

I have a good friend who just finished his masters degree to prepare for a life in music ministry. I'm afraid that he and his significant other will be leaving the UMC, as he won't be able to get a job anywhere. There are already LGBTQ clergy in the church (some married!). I don't know what will happen to them either.

18. The majority of the votes for the "Traditional Plan",

i.e., "we don't want any of those icky gay people in our church", came from church conferences in Asia, Africa and eastern Europe. Had this been a policy voted on by only the American church, the vote would have been for the "One Church" plan, that allows each individual church congregation to decide for themselves.

As a United Methodist, I am nearly as disappointed and depressed as I was on November 9, 2016. There are some parliamentary maneuvers that can still be tried, but this appears to be the end of the church in which I was raised.

I've been in tears since Tuesday evening.
