Seeing the enormous amount of defense of Trump all over social media and around the country. The fact that Trump has committed more crimes than anyone in history with no consequences. The entire Republican party is complicit. McConnell is putting so many far-right extremists on the federal courts, our rights are going to be eliminated.
I'm just having a hard time being positive about all this. If I had the means, I'd be leaving this country now.

(16,646 posts)But I think the constitution has a fatal flaw in it that will be our downfall.
Every state shouldn't get 2 senators regardless of population.
In about 20 years, 70% of the senate will be controlled by 30% of the population.

(16,646 posts)We can correct some, but I suspect we cannot correct the most important one.

Britain had its entrenched 'Rotten Borough' . . . unentrenched?

We have survived the Depression, Civil War, labor riots, Jim Crow, McCarthy, Father Coughlan, and so many other things. Far from perfect, we have an inner strength that makes itself known at the damnedest times.
The only real difference between now and 1861 is Facebook, and even that is just an extension of rumor mills and fake news that were going on back then.
Cheer up!

(45,064 posts)I don't see anyone doing anything about any of it. Small thinking isn't going to get us anywhere and the Pukes are going to fight tooth and nail to stop any change and centrists aren't going to go big enough to turn the tide.

(6,794 posts)Contentious debate over state representation. There were two plans: the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. The Great Compromise: each state would get two senators and House of Representatives would be determined by population. Small states feared their voices would be drowned out which is why there are only two senators from each state. California and North Dakota are equal. Sigh 😔

(16,646 posts)There were 13 colonies. Giving each state two senators didn't mean that the minority of the population could control 70% of the senate. Truth is, it would have been very hard for the minority to control the senate at all. It was supposed to give them a larger "voice" within government, to avoid the "tyranny of the majority". But I think history has proven that as the country expanded, it gave a fatally outsized voice to a minority. This is what lead to a civil war. I'm not sure what's going to happen this time.

(53,410 posts)We may lose but for a great majority it wont be because we gave up without a fight.
If that happened in our history we would still have slavery and only white men would be voting.
