(60,320 posts)His crimes go back more than a decade.
He continued criminal activity from within jail.
He gamed the Foreign Agents registration requirements many times over, registering after the fact as if it was overlooked by mistake. Once, maybe. His number of times is a pattern and he even advised others to do the same.
Well, he faces more sentencing in other courts. He's not done yet.

(23,393 posts)But since this judge has probably spoken behind the scenes to some elites, Manafort gets a slap on the wrist.
You or I, however, would be flogged in public, have all our possessions taken away, and our names associated along side that of Benedict Arnold.
Disgraceful!

(40,915 posts)Benedict Arnold did not have the right friends.
Two generals... Flynn & Arnold
Gen Michael Flynn and Gen Benedict Arnold both started out as patriots who served their country well.
Arnold died a traitor in England.
He was not lucky enough to have a Donald Trump on his side.

(55,117 posts)He has always been an arrogant, grand standing, biased GOP bastard in court. Attorneys who have worked with him told us about the guy. This is what I expected.
Next week, however, is a different judge and we also know how she acts in a courtroom. Fortunately it is the opposite of today's judge. She is fair, just, normal, and gives appropriate sentences.

(41,585 posts)I think they shopped for this judge because he was going to be lenient. Not saying the judge is crooked exactly, but he's notoriously easy on these rich, old white-collar criminals. Well, a lot can happen in four years.

(638 posts)He was charged with stealing a backpack, was never prosecuted, and was in jail for three years while he awaited trial. The guards tortured him to such a degree that when he finally got free that he killed himself shortly afterwards. Meanwhile a judge determines that a man who was CONVICTED of over ten crimes is said to have led an otherwise blameless life. Mr. Browder was the one who followed a blameless life not the POS who tampered with witnesses. Thankfully, he still has charges in the Southern District of New York.

(638 posts)He also said after he got out that the cops would come by his house and scare him as much as possible. His mother also died of grief shortly after he committed suicide. I remember him saying that dreaming was hell for him. That he could never escape what was done to him. All this for a young black man who was never convicted of any crime.

(2,851 posts)I'd originally told my husband that "somebody got to him." And, while that's very possible, after hearing more about this prick, I just decided it's he was just proudly waving his vanity White Male Privilege flag for all to see in that courtroom yesterday (and for months before). The prick was a Regan era appointee. That pretty much sums it up right there. He's been on that Virginia bench for decades on now, and no doubt rubbing elbows with the hoi polloi of Virginia, Maryland and D.C. for the duration. He sympathizes with Manafort and others like him because he IS HIM.

The shrub jr., administration liked that so much they made the NM state sentencing judge, Lourdes Martinez, a federal magistrate.
The sentence reeks.
What a disgrace.
Ellis behaved like he wants a cabinet position.

(12,529 posts)Who decides if the sentences are consecutive or concurrent? Is that by suggestion of the prosecutor's team or the individual judge in the second case?
Inquiring minds and all that.

(8,803 posts)who they are. They are emboldened to express their racism, misogyny, privilege, feeling of superiority with impunity. We need to remember who they are.
They. Don't. Care.
Shouldn't be a surprise anymore. We know 25% of the country cares more about which political 'club' they are in than principles, patriotism, their religion, truth, justice, and democracy. Stands to reason that some of them are judges and congresspersons.
Just another point of information that tells me these people see a way through this. They think they will come out on top, with no consequences. No question they have confidence, arrogance, a plan.

(5,995 posts)They documented how Manafort had violated his plea agreement and his attempted manipulation as factors that would justify a sentence at the high end.
A Reagan appointee who clearly disliked the whole special counsel process.

(11,885 posts)Just another example of a judge not capable of being fair and just and partisan. The American people will just be more motivated now to make sure trump and all republicans are voted out of office now. This sentence will backfire on them , and the American people who are the majority that voted against trump will show them who has the power with their votes. They can put out all the phony poll numbers they want, they will see much worse then what happened to them from the Mid Terms. This sentence shows the judges contempt for the rule of law . The American people by way of voting will show their contempt for trump and republicans trump law and order. This sentence will backfire on them.

(24,999 posts)At this rate we are going to be turkey. It's happening on our watch. We have an obligation to tend to our nation. The rule is to give it to our children better than we found it.
They WANT us to stop watching. Imagine if trump went un-watched? We need to take the bull by the horns. Insist that the investigation be completed regardless and move on to the repercussions. Whatever they may be.
Coal ash pits kind of symbolize it for me. And Global Warming. Once they flood into water supplies and the globe is so hot we can't grow food, then what? We have to face it that some really hard choices are ahead. Find some leaders who agree, and get going.
I think it's the PERFECT time for President H Clinton to stand up and start leading as if she were the president. President Obama to start speaking out more forcibly. VPs Gore and Biden to start speaking truth. President B Clinton and President J carter to start talking out about how bad this is. Is that too much too ask? We have to get some stronger more vocal leaders bc Congress is extremely busy, and a lot wont speak too forcibly bc they are running for president as well. The gloves need to come off. a rabid hardcore 31% of this country is driving us off the rails and everyone is reluctant bc theyll be attacked and insulted by the right. Oh well. Put your big boy pants on and get going. The worse it's broke...the harder to fix...if ever.
If they won't do it then we better start figuring out a Citizens Corp who arent afraid and start making some noise. LOUD noise. The gop thinks they have scared everybody into submission out of threat of civil war etc. Not sure about you, but, if i have to lay it down again for my Country. i will.
