Even after all these years, Harry Truman's comments about Republicans ring true today...

It's the most succinct and accurate comments from a president made about a political party ever, IMO.

And they admire the Government of the United States so much that they would like to buy it.

Now, my friends, that is the Wall Street Republican way of life. But there is another way — there is another way — the Democratic way, the way of the Democratic Party.

'Memba this? The famous 1948 photo when Truman was re-elected to his 2nd term. This was long before electronic voting machines and the vote counting could sometimes take as long as 24 hours. The Chicago Tribune printed their incorrect headline before the final vote tally came in, and boy did they look stupid.

I don't actually remember it myself, I wasn't born until 1951. But I remember my parents talking about it.

My grandmother had been a big fundraiser for Humphrey's Senate campaign in 1948, and my dad had just started his career as a print journalist. A friend of my dad's wrote what was to become a definitive book about the 1948 election called "Jumbos and Jackasses," and my dad got him to help me with my presentation with inside info. not all of which was in the book. My history teacher, a crusty old Englishman who did not suffer Southerners lightly, was visibly impressed and gave me my only high grade for the year on it. I had a great time relating Truman's wit, and it showed through. This guy delighted in failing a few students each year, and making them take summer make-up courses before they could graduate, so this was not a little deal.

Loathed Truman, just as he had loathed FDR. The early returns from the East Coast showed Dewey ahead, and he went with that headline (which is what he hoped would happen) despite his people telling him he should wait for the later returns.

Like they view the ultra-rich televangelists who convince their impoverished donors to keep giving them money: "he looks like he's living in heaven with all his fancy clothes, cars, houses and private planes. Maybe if I donate enough, I'll get into heaven, too."

anyone would want to be one of them? That accurate description of the GOP is basically a very big insult to the GOP and their lack of character. Why would anyone with an ounce of self respect want to be in a group of greedy, inhumane asses? Are they proud be be cruel, heartless, selfish, uncaring and unfair?

I think it is hard for me and probably most of us to understand how somebody can be so selfish and unethical. Don't the parents, schools, even churches teach a modicum of caring? Is this a difference in brain wiring or is it brain washing?

I don't know and I'll go to my grave mystified by the apparent evil of some people.

47. A better Truman quote...
Sat Mar 9, 2019, 07:16 PM
Mar 2019

"Wages and salaries in this country have increased from $29 billion in 1933 to more than $128 billion in 1947. That’s labor, and labor never had but one friend in politics and that is the Democratic Party and Franklin D. Roosevelt. And I say to labor what I have said to the farmers: they are the most ungrateful people in the world if they pass the Democratic Party by this year." - Harry S. Truman, Democratic National Convention, July 15 1948.

Or any year!

After Obama saved the auto industry in 2010, voters IN MICHIGAN voted for the Republicans in the mid-term election. FU Michigan.

And the same for the farm states.
