(5,801 posts)Governments of individual countries will still be able to erect gateways to restrict what their population receives from the satellite networks.
Big Tech will continue to work hand-in-hand with authoritarian states.

(28,127 posts)is very scary. Could be used in a weapon-like fashion between countries? Researching this info now.
Thank you.

(5,801 posts)is that the satellite signals would be received by gateway earth stations, the control points which would then pass along only approved content within a specific country.
Of course there presumably could be jamming also, for hostile purposes.

(32 posts)Do not let Trump and the RW pin the label Socialist on us. We are not Socialist, or very few of us are. We do not believe workers should own the means of production, to the exclusion of capital investment. We are Social Security Democrats who believe the government has the duty to look out for the welfare of it citizens and give them security in their life, like medical care when they are sick and the education needed for a job.

(10,208 posts)Socialism sound so much better than capitalism. Just looking at the basic description of both makes me think capitalism is so 16th century. I'm not a socialist because there are so many other evolving economic systems out there that I haven't made a decision on what system is best. But capitalism is better only in comparison to slavery, feudalism, dictatorships and totalitarian regimes like China and Soviet Russia.
I do believe workers should own the means of production. I certainly think workers could do a better job than the capitalist who are running things now. Workers certainly couldn't do a worse job than capitalist.

(9,426 posts)is 60. Citizens then can claim their "Old Age Pension". I am British. When I applied for SS at 62, I was told I had to declare my pension from the UK. I had not worked in the UK for many, many years. The officer at the SS office said he would check it all out. I received back pay of my pension for the two years since I had turned 60, plus receive a pension every month since! I worked full time in the UK from the age of 16 until 21.

(7,142 posts)The military is upset that we are down to 12 aircraft carriers, the rest of the world has 3.
Trump is planning on putting more military spending in the budget.
It's a matter of priorities. Read or listen to Ike's farewell speech and Ike was a Republican.

(29,274 posts)chronic widespread excessive wasteful spending that isnt controlled at all. We need to spend money on widespread audits and outlaw conflicts of interest in all government spending.

We can't have nice things because the military orders aircraft that have systems requiring pilots to have helmets that cost $400,000 a piece.
You read that right. FOUR HUNDRED THOUSAND FUCKING DOLLARS A PIECE FOR A GOD DAMNED HELMET!

Now to be clear, as some of my past threads might seem a bit contradictory (my "Aviation Enthusiasts" threads for example), I am an enthusiast of all things aviation. Planes are cool. What I am NOT a fan of is the absurd wastefulness of the United States Defense Department and it's insatiable appetite for money.

(5,528 posts)Back in the 80's,I was doing some work in the UK. One of the British engineers went to Spain for two weeks. I was told it was cheaper to go there than to stay at home. True or not, it didn't sound too socialist to me. It sounded humane.

(327 posts)As a Brit who has spent many years working as an expat; when I have needed to visit the UK, I've always been aggravated that for the cost of a flea-pit Brit hotel (way outside of London), I could have had a decent hotel just about anywhere in Europe, save the major capital cities.
Many Brit pensioners chose to relocate to Spain, where their pension would go much further. Inexplicably, some of those pensioners voted for fu(#ing Brexit??
Hope they enjoy the astronomic heating bills and housing costs they voted for.

(5,528 posts)My late wife was British and grew up in NZ. We always thought if things got bad here we'd either go back to NZ or move to Canada or England. Her second to last passport didn't include the right of residency in Britain. So I imagine we'd have to apply for it. I see now US citizens need visas or permits to travel. In 88, I needed a visa to go from England to France for a long weekend. Had to spend a whole day in London to get it. These Worldwide Trumpers are retreating into their forts and the future will be more like the past.

(22,166 posts)rooms (and not just in Chicago too, but seemingly everywhere) are at least $500 a night it seems like, and trips that you see on Wheel of Fortune seem to start at $5000-$6000 on up. Where has America gone? Has predatory capitalism ruined it all for us? You can only squeeze a turnip so much...

(9,685 posts)Some things are undeniable. A couple of years ago I had a very inconvenient stomach ulcer. I did not know this until it burst and I started vomiting blood. To be fair I ignored the symptoms for a wee while. My SO phoned for an ambulance. It was there at my home in 15 minutes. I was in the emergency room for about 3 hours. I was admitted, I spent 3 days in the hospital and then insisted I needed to be discharged because we had a general election that day and I was going to vote. I went back the next day for further tests. I have been back 4 times in the last couple of years, to manage my ulcer (finally ulcer free, yay!). COST? ZERO. I pay my tax (more than the average) and when I need it.... I told you I was ill...
Uncle Joe

And one of my employers fired me for taking my vacation after three years, one lousy week and all did was go get my furniture from a storage in another state.
Capitalism, fuck it.

(2,603 posts)My daughter in law gets time off whenever school is out. Now mind you, she doesnt get paid as much as a full time worker. But when the school day ends, she goes home. If schools are out for a week, shes off. When her son gets older she can switch to full time. It amazes me. Ive only been in England for 2 years and Im continuously surprised.
2 weeks ago, my husband injured his back and couldnt drive himself to the doctor. My vision is too weak for driving. We called his doctor, who at the end of his workday, made a housecall. He checked my husband, wrote two prescriptions, which I filled at the pharmacy two blocks away. Not our regular pharmacy but I explained the situation, had the medication in hand in 5 minutes. Cost was zero.

(4,999 posts)The easy rebuttal to this is those people pay so much in taxes! And americans instantly run away from the idea...
The message has to be -- citizens in those countries enjoy a higher standard of health care for less cost in in premiums because they are willing to pay the government a lower premium via taxes versus USA paying higher premiums to private for-profit health care.
Most of these items on the list fall into that category -- not only do you get better service, but it's cheaper. Americans just need to wake up and see taxes aren't a bad thing, taxes can provide a high standard of service for many things that private companies could never compete with.
I support many of these things because I am a financial conservative -- it's cheaper for me, and cheaper for society as a whole. I'd much rather have extra $$ left over to spend on other things.
