Both claims were false, and both should be prosecuted, but there’s a big difference between faking a threatening email and involving two other people to fake an actual hate crime assault.

The reporting indicates that prior to faking his own assault, Smollett faked a hateful death threat and sent it to the studio.

I don't know whether the police were involved in that or not, but otherwise it's pretty much the same thing that Wohl appears to have done... and Smollett's actions at that point did not get any national attention at all.

I do think Smollett could be mentally ill. I have some experience with the borderline personality disorder and it has that vibe to me.

But, damn what is with making this stuff up in general? Is it the connectivity we have now and we are more aware? Is it because most people now recognize that white folks have done this to other groups forever and it’s finally getting through that it’s not right, so it’s being better reported?
