Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsWill you be voting more for Obama or mainly against Romney?
I will be voting against Romney and the republicans, not really for Obama as in excitement or enthusiasm for him...To be honest, he has been pretty disappointing as president, speaking as an emphatic liberal. Not going to start listing all the problems I have with certain policies, but suffice it to say he is no progressive champion.
How about you? Are you really excited about an Obama second term, and are voting for him with enthusiasm, or is it more of a case of stopping the republicans from getting in and ruining the country again?

(14,031 posts)I very much like President Obama, and feel he has held things together pretty well considering what he was left with. I trust the President and we are on the same page on most issues.
I like no Republican candidates, I despise their platform and consider their stand on the vast majority of issues morally reprehensible.

I am voting for Obama. This is not a primary so the why for me is irrelevant as a Democrat.

(14,378 posts)but the OP sure is.
the raison d'etre of much of the left involves never accepting things as they are, but working to improve them. This is hard to balance. Especially when there is so much misery on this earth. The idea that any President is the sole answer is just ridiculous. By definition , the President is President of ALL the people. That includes a lot of folks to the right of the far left. But you definitely want a guy there who is sympathetic to your cause, and able to push things left.

(8,217 posts)Granted, I am somewhat happier with Obama nowadays.
However, think of it this way, even if I were to think positive of Obama, Romney's and Ryan's negatives far far outstrip my optimism for Obama.
You ask which one affects me more.
I find Romney as a deluded sociopath who enjoys cruelty and found the same thing on his running mate.
So yeah, I am voting against that.

It's not like another Republican would have made the decision harder.

(40,416 posts)Anybody voting merely against Romney maybe doesn't really see a difference. That is one of the reasons why somebody as idiotic as Romney even stands a chance of getting to the White House.
It is the same fucking logic that gave us the fucking tea bag take over of the US House of Representatives.
Oh dear!!! Both parties are just the same! Oh Dear! I don't know who to vote for. I think I'll stay home.
Well, if you think that way, you're going to get what the fucking idiots want.
I reject your argument. There is always a choice. It may not be the choice you want. But the choice remains. Either choose one, or shut the fuck up. If you don't like the choices, run as precinct delegate yourself and fucking get into the pond yourself.
I don't know if you've done this. But I get sick and tired of this, "I don't like Obama, but..." rhetoric here.
He's our president and our candidate. If you don't like him, I don't know what to say other than maybe you are posting on the wrong forum.

(9,033 posts)If someone "merely voting against Romney maybe doesn't really see a difference" why would he/she vote against him? Flip a coin?
I don't hate Obama and I think he was handed a pile of steaming dog poop but IMHO he didn't do a Great Job dealing with it, he has been Very Slow to learn the important facts about the batshitcraziness of the opposition and Even Slower to spot the craziness in his own advisors' policiies (austerity anyone? anyone? grand bargains? bah).
He was emphatically NOT the guy we needed in '08, and I have hopes for SOME improvement, but I still don't think he's what we need now.

(40,416 posts)That was the Dem choice, and it wasn't that close.
And I too thought he handled his first term not too well. But he was the president, not me, and not you. He made the decisions he made because of the Congressional environment he inherited. He paid for that apparent miscue in 2010, I think.
But regardless, he is our candidate and we need to support him. He has learned a lot in four years. His second term will undoubtedly be more aggressive, as he will no longer have to consider reelection.
These reasons, as well that I both like him and trust him, are why I fully support the guy. After a lifetime involved in politics, I don't expect perfection in these matters.
You play the hand you're dealt. If you don't like it, that's too bad. You still have to play the damned thing. How can anybody be anything but FOR Obama?

It's really annoying to see people disregard the total obstruction by the GOP since the night of the inauguration when the Luntz group decided to say no to everything, along with McConnell's statement that the wingers one goal was to make PBO a one-term president.

(12,081 posts)I've heard there are a lot of liberals out there angry at Obama. I am not one of them. In a perfect world, we would have single payer health care, we would be completely out of Iraq and Afghanistan, the bank regulation would have been much, much tougher, etc. But considering that the republicans have had an agenda from the very beginning to set Obama up for complete failure I don't think he has done too bad. And even though I am a liberal I also see the need for compromise. The problem of course is that the republicans never compromise on anything so when we compromise we end up looking like we have no spine. So, do we live in a perfect world? Do we get everything we want? no. But I am pretty happy with what he has done, and would much rather see him back in office than the man who wants to decimate our social programs and give more tax breaks to the wealthy. I am voting for Obama. My husband who is an independent by the way is also voting for Obama.
