The Venezuelan government said opposition leader Juan Guaido would be barred from public office for 15 years on Thursday, as it seeks to crack down on the US-backed rival to President Nicolas Maduro.
The move, announced by Auditor General Elvis Amoroso on state television, marked another effort by Maduro's regime to politically sideline Guaido, who is recognized by the US and 50 other countries as Venezuela's interim president.
Amoroso said his office decided "to ban this citizen [Juan Guaido] from all elected public office for the maximum duration under the law."
Venezuela's single-chamber congress, called the National Assembly, is in opposition hands and stands as the sole institution not under the control of Maduro.

A second, unconstitutional parliament installed that his party controls due to election-fraud.

The US has been terrorizing Venezuela since Chavez.
Everyone here knows my position - Venezuela is a sovereign country - get the hell out and leave their oil alone.

(16,423 posts)Why do you insist on looking at that from a US-perspective? There are other countries in the world, you know.
Why would the past and present behaviour of the US matter when determining whether Maduro qualifies as a dictator or not?
Step 1: Make a checklist, what makes a ruler a dictator and what makes a country a dictatorship.
Step 2: Go and look if you find mentions of the US on that list.
