Serious issue for college students and others in Iowa----Legislature wants to change early voting and absentee voting rules-------------------the three worst proposals 1.
would ban any early voting to be held in a state building--think universities---2. Would ask graduating college students if they planned to stay in Iowa upon graduation---if not--- would then be removed from voter rolls----3. if voter doesn't vote in presidential election then registration would be changed to inactive--one step closer to purging the voter rolls.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- don't have computer knowledge to post links to paper and am stuck on dialup. rural area---------------politely request help--papers reporting latest would be DES MOINES REGISTER and propably WATERLOO COURIER-------- plz feel free to start new thread in appropriate place if you have the skills, time and equipment----thanks for any help making this a normal thread just too new--------------- sorry

You might have to organize calling/letter writing/showing up for hearings to legislature to fight this. See if there is a trustworthy election integrity group in your area already. And even though election integrity is a non-partisan issue, I would contact local democratic organization to bring people on board with this cause.

(112,089 posts)The bill appears to target state universities such as ISU in Ames. Private universities would not be affected.
One possibility that might help spread word about the bill is at the Bleeding Heartland blog. You might want to contact Laura Belin at info@bleedingheartland.com . I did not see any posts about this topic so I suggest sending the link that I posted above to Laura so she can give it some publicity.
I'm also cross-posted this in the Iowa Group here on DU so that it will get more attention.

(62,406 posts)Johnson County has frequent absentee balloting stations on premises from the day voting starts until Election Day.
It also targets the student union (IMU) on campus where they also have frequent voting stations.
I can't imagine it is legal, but we may be finding out.
This also why the radical Republicans are trying to totally change how judges are chosen - so they can approve laws lie this.

cant imagine how churches are okay, but state owned buildings are not.
working for my sister out in the burbs, many of the polling places are churches, and they get to make waaaay too many of their own rules. candidates are not allowed to put out signs until the morning of the election. you cant even go plant them in the middle of the night. they take them all down when they open the polls.
this not only disadvantages progressive candidates by giving too much power to limit speech, it hurts voter turn out. if you arent a church goer, you will have a harder time finding you polling place ahead of time.
some were even early polling places that did not allow candidate signs.
