RECONSTRUCTION: AMERICA AFTER THE CIVIL WAR

ABOUT THE FILM
Henry Louis Gates Jr. presents a vital new four-hour documentary series on Reconstruction: America After the Civil War. The series explores the transformative years following the American Civil War, when the nation struggled to rebuild itself in the face of profound loss, massive destruction, and revolutionary social change. The twelve years that composed the post-war Reconstruction era (1865-77) witnessed a seismic shift in the meaning and makeup of our democracy, with millions of former slaves and free black people seeking out their rightful place as equal citizens under the law. Though tragically short-lived, this bold democratic experiment was, in the words of W. E. B. Du Bois, a ‘brief moment in the sun’ for African Americans, when they could advance, and achieve, education, exercise their right to vote, and run for and win public office.

I'm so looking forward to it, too.

It's a miniseries, I think in 4 parts, so it's gonna go deep. Love it already!

Lincoln's biggest mistake during Reconstruction was being too nice. He should have hung every single Confederate general and politician for treason. Yes, it would have made things uncomfortable then. But maybe it would have prevented a lot of the stupidity we have now. People who get hanged for treason rarely have schools and roads named for them. They rarely have statues erected in their honor.

The South, where I am from, was let off the hook too easily.

I agree and a group of traitors killed him. I wonder sometimes if Reconstruction would have lasted longer and the affects truly lasting if he'd lived.

But we're at the beginning of changing the major hidden narratives that can't be denied.
