It is the one where he refuses to budge.
He says nobody cares whether or not he shows his tax returns. He is very, very wrong on that calculation.
Several states have voted to require presidential candidates to show their returns before they can get on the ballot.
It is my understanding that most polls also show that the American people believe it is an important issue.
Donald Trump hopes this issue fades away. It may be his "Achilles heel".
He likes to say that people knew he was not going to show his taxes when they voted for him in 2016. That is not true. His lie at the time was that he would show his returns as soon as they were out of "audit". Most people actually thought they would see his returns, contrary to what Trump now says.
Democrats would be wise to keep this issue front and center.

(6,262 posts)His adoration of her is creepy to the max.
Subpoena her. Charge her. Federal Court(s.) State Court(s.) All around the world on her mega-shady "business' deals. Small suits. Large suits. Small threats. Big threats.
Do it so his minions can't save her because they are in court as well.
He will cave in a nanosecond as along as a "deal" gets her off many hooks.

(12,344 posts)so why should he show it to us? It may be true that a lot of his supporters think it's important, but it won't change their votes either.
And those states that are requiring tax returns are ones he won't win anyway, so I can see him just being the first major candidate not to be on the ballot in every state. He'd probably even like that just to show that blue states can go to hell.
Also those laws may be unconstitutional. So there's a court battle coming and who knows if it will be done by 2020 anyway?
Like all other Trump news it will make a few days of headlines, but that's it. we are better off running on health care.

(12,344 posts)That people think it's "important" that he show his returns, or that they won't vote for him if he doesn't? The first one is irrelevant, only the second one matters.

(111,092 posts)....that Trump's base, 30-40%, would probably agree with you?
marylandblue
(12,344 posts)We're not voting for him no matter what, right? So that leaves 10-20% on the middle, many of whom voted for him in 2016 without seeing his returns. If they change their vote this time, is it more likely they decided after 4 years that his returns are now a deal breaker or would it be that they were sick of Trump anyway?

(111,092 posts)...they never thought he wasn't going to show his returns. He led them to believe otherwise.

(28,120 posts)In theory, Trump could be blocked from the ballot in any state where the new requirement became law. But not a single state has enacted it so far, and the governors of California and New Jersey have vetoed it after it passed both state chambers. It's more interesting as a way for state Democrats to troll Trump than as an actual re-election threat.
Where it stands: Rhode Island is the latest state to pass this measure through its state Senate, according to the Providence Journal, and Maryland's state Senate passed a bill in May. Both will now move to their states' House of Delegates for consideration.
One big problem: It might not be constitutional for a state to require presidential candidates to release their tax returns in order to get ballot access.
The U.S. Supreme Court has previously ruled that neither states nor the federal government can create additional qualifications for congressional representatives or senators, per AP, and various legal experts anticipate that would extend to presidential candidates.
