Buttigieg looking to begin new era in politics with historic candidacy

SOUTH BEND — "My name is Pete Buttigieg. They call me Mayor Pete. I am a proud son of South Bend, Indiana, and I am running for president of the United States."

With that, it's official.

Mayor Pete Buttigieg is a candidate for president.

We were at the Studebaker Building 84 on Sunday, where the mayor took his highly anticipated announcement inside.

The backdrop of the old automaker factory was the perfect setting for his central message for his brand-new candidacy: it's time to turn the page for America's next chapter.

“Change is coming, ready or not," said Buttigieg. "The question of our time is whether families and workers will be defeated by the changes beneath us or whether we will master them and make them work toward a better, everyday life for us all.”

The 37-year-old mayor of South Bend used the mayors of Dayton, Ohio, West Sacramento, California and Austin, Texas on stage at the start of the event -- and their endorsements -- to hammer home his point.

"Politics on the city level is much more personal and effective than what is happening in Washington these days," continued Buttigieg.

He says there's also a need for generational leadership change.

His bumper sticker slogan is what he says is "at the heart of every voter": freedom, security and democracy.

“Our conservative friends care about freedom, but they only make it part of the way," said Buttigieg. "They only see freedom from. Freedom from taxes, freedom from regulations, as though government were the only thing that can make somebody 'unfree.’ "

"The idea that security and patriotism belongs to one political party needs to end today. There's a lot more to safety and security than putting up a wall from sea to shining sea."

Buttigieg left his large, loud and enthusiastic crowd with one final thought.

"If you and I rise together to meet this moment, one day they will write histories, not just about one campaign or one presidency but about the era that began here today in this building where past, present, and future meet, right here this chilly day in South Bend."
