But I beg to differ!

There are good things still happening in our world. Pete Buttigieg is running for President! He's a really good guy. If you haven't checked him out, you might want to.

He helps me feel much more optimistic than I have in a long time.

I know what it feels like to have someone say nasty things.......so I try to avoid that. It's amazing how much good you can do by just showing some empathy to someone who's having a bad moment.

Perhaps different causes, for their extinctions, but the same results. Perhaps, though, we can start to do something to change things. That's what's different.

The Mayans and the Aztecs, Europe and the Black Death, the Mongol invasions, the list goes on. It only took the plague three years to annihilate anywhere from 30-60% of human life in Europe. Species died and continue to die en-masse all throughout history, replaced by animals better adapted to suit the changing world.

History is vast and varied. We will adapt or we will die, but nothing you're worried about is "new" or "exceptional." It's all happened before.

Killing it all for greed. Mass extinction of species is what upsets me the most. The joy that wild animals/plants/ancient trees/bees bring to all humans, to our soul, is being extinguished and most cannot be brought back once snuffed out.

All for a little bit of money.

All so that a very few individuals can have a WHOLE FUCKING LOT of money.

They will want to replicate the architecture which means there will be a need for a group of art specialist who will educate themselves in the historical manner of construction. For some in the art world, it will be an opportunity of a lifetime. And the final construction will be a legacy to the world.

Many people had deep conversations about our country and why we were attacked and how complacent we had gotten. Many made resolutions to be kinder, spend more time with family, stop the glorification of busy and excess accumulation of stuff. Get back to basics. How long did that last?

Then the bottom fell out of the economy - big time and we started examining all the big houses that were built and how over extended lots of people were just to have the big houses. Thousands upon thousands lost their jobs, houses, everything. We vowed to not be as complacent next time. How long did that last?

We just can't seem to sustain making major changes in our culture. How many years since kindergarteners were slaughtered in their school and what have we done about strict gun control? Nada.

I hate to be a downer, but I just don't see major progress. We just don't seem to learn from the past. We take two baby steps forward and no big steps like New Zealand did. Within a week they made the drastic change in gun laws. Why can't we? I just don't get it.

What about Obama Care..the beginning of universal health care..ok,
Wait...Do we have a female majority leader of the House of Representatives? Yes or NO.?
All kinds of people on the way up in politics? An Asian fellow? many others?
..Nothing positive?...no major progress?? Define progress.............................

ok. My car makes a noise when another car passes on the right and I can't see the other car..
ok. My car makes a noise when I back out of a parking spot, and another car is coming, or say a bicycle is ...........riding along and I can't see it...OK......

How about Pneumonia Vaccine?

....you can check this one out.....

in 1979, there were about 55,000 deaths on the highway..
Last Year...2017..about 35,000 deaths (they are still tabulating 2018)...also...40 percent more cars than in 1979.

....... Close to 50 percent reduction in deaths...with 40 percent more cars

......so no progress..eh?...you don't believe? look at "deaths on the highways" Wikipedia ... Of course there is .......progress but you need to define it and know what it is.

How long did it take us to get the ACA and how much of that has already been gutted by the GOP? We got complacent and the voters didn't think it was important to vote and the GOP gained control of everything. We've had a female majority leader once before, same one to be exact, but same thing happened there. One step forward, one back, one forward and we're back to where we were on that issue. All kinds of people on their way up in politics only happened in the midterms which was less than six months ago. It's still overwhelmingly white men running things.

I don't measure a country's cultural progress by materialism. Let me know when the majority of the people are no longer propping up the oil industry with gasoline engines.

For every person who used to be killed in an auto death, we now just kill them with guns.

I never said we've made no progress. What I said was our progress is baby steps compared to some other countries.

So, you want my definition of progress? It'll be when we realize that bigger and more isn't always better, and excess consumption and materialism at the expense of our climate and environment are not the most important measures of a holistically healthy nation.

We like to think we live in an enlightened society that has moved past racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination, but in fact, we were proudly engaging in open discrimination just a few decades ago. I was at the Brooklyn Museum yesterday, where I read that when one of their
marble sculptures was first acquired in the 1910s, there was an outcry over the nudity. We are getting better, just not as fast as you or I would like.
