for ten years, starting in 1923. They almost succeeded; Hitler was imprisoned. But they were in the minority. The Weimar Republic under Hindenburg was decidedly conservative, and the corporatists strove to maintain this situation (just like they do today). The early release of Hitler enabled him to continue his program of stirring up the conservatives. And it was Hindenburg's handing over the chancellorship to Hitler that sealed the deal. It didn't hurt his cause that Hitler was not above lying through his teeth at every turn.
