There's more than ample evidence even in the redacted Mueller report to support impeachment. What kind of country are we if we ignore criminal, possibly treasonous, behavior from a president? I guess that remains to be seen.

(612 posts)Our problem is that "Joe Schmoe" (our average citizen) is NOT paying close attention. He / she needs to see those hearings to appreciate the extent of Trump's malfeasance and betrayal of the American people and our laws.
I don't believe that impeachment has been abandoned by our Democratic Leadership. But I do believe they are correct in their assumption that average Americans need to be more fully informed and convinced of the undeniable rationale for impeachment.
And then -- even if it takes a couple months -- the House of Representatives should vote for impeachment, regardless of its fulfillment in the Senate. Every legislator needs to vote for, or against, impeachment, and -- after having been informed of Trump's disgusting, unAmerican behavior -- the American people need to know who voted FOR or AGAINST impeachment. In brief, impeachment should not occur before the people of our nation fully understand the reasons for it.

I respect your view point and agree he deserves it. But I believe if we impeach and the Senate does not convict, and well all know they wont, it will make him harder to beat in 20. Barr concluding he committed no crimes, as bullshit as it is, gives the republicans in the Senate all the cover they need. Hell, even if Mueller had proved both collusion and obstruction they would not convict. They would get run in the republican primaries.
Reasonable people including some I really respect disagree with me. But it my honest opinion.
We need to keep pushing the issues that caused our win in 18. Healthcare primary of them.

What do you think Congress' top 3 priorities should be?
Healthcare reform 53% (#1 priority)
Impeaching Trump 18% (#7 priority)
IMHO if we proceed with impeachment (which will NOT remove Trump from office) with only 18% public support we do so at our own peril.

(11,949 posts)Hopefully they can make our pissed off base understand that not impeaching is the road to long term success. I think they will. My post against it are not being attacked with the vigor they were 2 days ago. People of course disagree. And perhaps they are correct.
I respect those who want to impeach now. In my heart I want it. But Ive learned the hard way that what brings immediate satisfaction often results in sub-optimum long term results.

(612 posts)We are in uncharted territory with this usurper of the presidency, and it's good to hear all points-of-view. Thanks!

(11,949 posts)I am 53 so did not grow up with online debate.
I understand and respect people who think we should impeach. But I think it would be a disaster. No one on DU speaking meet face-to-face would insult me for saying that. And of course I would never insult them for disagreeing. It would lead to discussion. But of course, we know that its not how online talking goes. It makes insulting others easy. A cowards way out.
So I try to pretend that when talking to someone on DU Im talking to someone face-to-face. If they choose to do different, thats not my problem.
I have had my opinion changed on DU. But never by someone being insulting.
I hope you have a nice night and Easter tomorrow.

(612 posts)And, upon reflection of your thoughtful post, I agree with you. Impeachment is not the answer. I agree with you. A solid defeat of Trump on the issues is the answer. Thank you for your insights. You helped me to see things differently, and I appreciate it.

(11,949 posts)Keep in mind I might be wrong. I always do!
But I am confident that if we just keep pushing our positions and let Trump be trump we will win.
My wife is from Indiana. Where are you located? She is from southwest of Indy. Small town.
Im a Louisiana boy. The Midwest reticence is lost on me! You know how I feel! The Midwesterners I married into keep their feelings close to the vest. Always polite, mind you. After 32 year together we still laugh at our inherent differences. That what happens when a German American marries an American of French heritage.
Have a nice evening.

(612 posts)And I think we all have to admit that we can be mistaken, and have room to learn and change our minds. This is true for all of us. I have real problems with folks who express absolute opinions, and become hostile and argumentative if pertinent facts are introduced into the discussion. This is true in day to day interactions, and especially on DU.
Glad to meet you.
