We would assume that the debate in the House would cover most of the charges in the Mueller Report plus others, such as the emolument clause, which was not addressed by Mueller.
Also, at this time, Trump and his supporters are arguing that it is over, that
It is time to "move on". The Mueller report was definitive in its conclusions, as stated by AG Barr.
But suppose Mueller contradicts Barr's conclusions? What would be the Republican's defense in not convicting Donald Trump? How do they defend the attack by the Russians on our election system in 2016? How would they defend Donald Trump accepting the help of the Russians?
What would be their best argument?
Considering that there are more than twenty Republican Senators up for re-election, how would they vote, especially if Trump's polls were in the 30's, where they are at this moment?
I think it would be a very tough case to defend.

(111,052 posts)Their case could look very weak going into the Senate, I would think? I don't see how they could claim any sort of victory?

(42,278 posts)Trumpco would immediately scream that he has been vindicated. The media would continue their relentless investigations into whether the Democrats went too far and would this doom their chances for 2020? The Trump has a huge weight off his shoulders meme would be all over cable news.
McConnell, et al, would continue the investigations they began into "Democrat bias" in the FBI, Hillary's emails, Uranium One and any other stupid thing they could think of. In the meantime, he'd have gotten 100 more RW judges confirmed to lifetime appointments.

(261 posts)and contacting Congress and writing a letter to the editor of local newspaper supporting impeachment. Then I listened to Josh Marshalls podcast today and have settled down quite a bit. He said that impeachment in the house is actually a fairly short process and wouldnt give them a chance to uncover other crimes that we know Mueller looked into, but didnt even cover in his report. Much of the counter intelligence stuff didnt make it in. And youre right. When the Senate votes against conviction thats going to really grab the narrative. So Im going to contact congress again and say, On the other hand...

(42,278 posts)I'd love to impeach the MFer and see him hauled out of the WH, frothing and screaming.
The Rs are masters at the messaging game. Look at how they are getting away with their "Time to move on" narrative now. I'm not saying it's working, per se, but name me one MSM journalist who is challenging them with their rhetoric vis a vis B Clinton. Where are the "Where are the Republicans?" editorials. Nowhere.

(261 posts)and they have so hammered the media as liberal and fake that journalists cringe at these slings and bend over backwards to avoid the criticism. There was a time when newscasts were subsidized by other programming as more of a public service, so they didnt survive on ratings to attract advertisers. But even if we returned to that, we have so many other media sources it probably wouldnt make a dent.

(10,266 posts)Because it will FORCE the GOP Senate to defend WHY they want to keep a RUSSIAN CAPPO in the White House, and then have to RUN ON THAT DECISION.
THATS what finally got Nixon to resign.
