If you REALLY want Trump impeached, here's how to help make it happen

Last edited Sat Apr 27, 2019, 04:20 PM - Edit history (1)

The one and only reason the House isn't going full-steam ahead with impeachment right now is that they know the public is not with them on this yet and unless the public opinion changes, he can be impeached but he will remain in office.

Fortunately, they're moving forward with investigations and hearings that we all hope will help shift public opinion. But don't leave it up to them. You can help them change the landscape.

Most people that you and I know probably haven't actually read the Mueller Report and only know what they've heard and read about it, if they've even done that. But why now organize some friends or neighbors locally to raise public awareness about the Report, impeachment, obstruction of justice, etc.?

Write letters to the editor of your local paper. Dial in to radio call-in shows. Organize public forum or town halls to discuss the report and why and how local people can mobilize. It doesn't need to be a huge even just a few people is a success. You can do it at a local venue or even in someone's living room or basement. If your local politicians participate, that's great. But if they don't, do it without them. Visit your Senators' offices and insist on hearing from them whether they would vote to remove and, if not, why not. If you can't visit their offices, contact the local media and demand that THEY ask them the same questions.

This doesn't have to be a complicated or sophisticated effort. The main thing is to educate and mobilize people in your community. If this occurs in pockets across the country - here, and then there, and then there, and then there ... - it can have a real impact by helping to undergird and bolster what the House is doing and make it easier for them to take the steps we all want them to. The House of Representatives and Senate Democrats need help and support from their constituents, not constant waves of criticism and "advice" from the sidelines.

DON'T just complain! DO SOMETHING!

1. I think you meant to type "isn't" instead of "is" in your first sentence?

The House did not start impeachment proceedings until 1974, only after public opinion shifted drastically as a result of the Watergate hearings. By the time the impeachment hearings began in MAY 1974, support for impeachment was close to 50%.

Those hearings, which were conducted outside of and prior to the impeachment hearings, were instrumental in building public support for impeachment. Many of us now are calling for hearings and investigations - which Congress is doing - because we believe that they will educated the public and build support for impeachment. But starting impeachment proceedings now won't necessarily get us anywhere and certainly would not be consistent with how the Democrats handled Watergate.

And passed a resolution opening an Impeachment Inquiry in February 1974, not May.

So they didn't wait until public opinion changed, they showed leadership and acted with appropriate urgency.

Have you checked it out? I have posted it on DU a lot and it is under Activist Headquarters.

Go to this link and it will give you many ideas that are right up your ally. Also, have you checked out your local Indivisible group? They often organize actions like this.

His TV ads have a number to call your Congress member (571)200-3505 to get hooked up to your rep using your zip code.

I'm familiar with and fully support what these groups are doing. I'm asking people here what they're doing and encouraging them to get involved locally, if they're not already.

But thanks for the info!

7. I Question The Poll Results....

I believe that many people have decided that the Dems should go the House Committee Investigation route; corroborate the Mueller Report and when the info is overwhelming then begin impeachment proceedings.

So many people will answer the impeachment poll by saying they are not for impeachment. There are only two responses for the poll - for or not for impeachment. It doesn't allow for the people that want to gather more info first thru the committee route then move to impeachment.

8. That's an excellent point

I would fall into the category. I'm in favor of impeachment IF done right and don't think it should be done now. The House needs to gather more evidence and help shape public opinion before proceeding down that road.

I don't really understand why people think investigations and hearings are foot-dragging or useless and that an impeachment inquiry must be opened now. Don't they realize that an impeachment inquiry IS hearings and investigations. But the various committees at this stage are in a much better position to do what would be too much for the Judiciary Committee to do right now.

I would much rather have Financial Services, Oversight, Ways and Means, Intelligence, and Judiciary (among others) all working on wide-ranging investigations and hearings to gather the evidence needed to hold this man accountable instead of having Judiciary launch a proceeding based primarily on the Mueller Report (which, so far, hasn't been enough to convince a majority of people that he must go) and then hope to gather additional evidence to bolster their case.

Let the committees do their jobs!

11. Opening an impeachment inquiry is the best way to get the essential evidence

Standard investigations can be easily obstructed by Barr and Trump, as we have seen.

An impeachment inquiry is the only certain route to obtaining the unredacted Meuller report, as legal rulings allow for exemption from Rule 6e (grand jury testimony).

That's the leadership that is needed at this moment, not reacting to obstruction and delays intended to "run out the clock", but proactive measures that anticipate and circumvent obstruction to bring the truth to the American people.

that other investigations don't have that would have much impact on forcing anything out of these people. If Barr and Trump are bent on thwarting a Congressional investigation, they'll do it whether it's impeachment or oversight.

Because an impeachment inquiry removes the Rule 6e restrictions on disclosure of Grand Jury testimony, any obstruction or refusal by Barr would lead to his impeachment and possible indictment.

The election was corrupted by individuals beyond MY control. My vote was nullified. Now why do we want to pussy-foot on an impeachment? There's already sufficient evidence to support impeachment so let's get to it! Let's protect our voting process. If not, why should any of us bother? I can't do much but I can sure raise hell!

Senate vote I'd love it if somehow it was possible to do name by name votes WITH intros. For example, Lindsay Graham, you announced that ---------was an impeachable offense for Nixon and supported impeachment on that charge for Clinton. How do you now vote to impeach Trump on the charge of -------.
Everyone who voted to impeach Clinton for offenses they now excuse Trump for should publicly show their ethics are just a facade and the true justice means nothing to them.
In my dreams.

can serve the same purpose - and get to it much quicker. When all of these committees put this information before the public, there will likely be more public taste for impeachment than it the House launches impeachment proceedings now.
