Whitehouse criticized Barr's use of the word "spying" to describe legitimate investigative activity, noting that it isn't a word commonly used by DOJ. Barr quipped: "It's commonly used by me." Barr added that "spying is a good English word" and notes that prior to all the "faux outrage" the press used it routinely.
In response to Whitehouses comments, Barr separately said that he regularly refers to appropriate government surveillance activities as spying and does not consider the word pejorative. He added that there has been faux outrage over his use of the word to describe activities performed against the Trump campaign.

To dissemble in this manner shows that he is playing to the FOX crowd, the lowest common denominator, the fools who believe whatever sounds sensible to them, even if muttered by someone who knows better.
This isn't a hearing on whether Americans want to press forward. It's a hearing on the merits. Impeachment will be the same. So will indictments and convictions.
