(11,738 posts)They do not however, always back the far right candidate. Libertarians are usually young stilted men, who think of things in a very childish way. There is a spectrum like in most other economic and political schools of thought. Some are more socially liberal, and others are very conservative. The overarching way of thinking for a libertarian is that they want a very small ineffectual federal government. They also think that you can use the courts to resolve almost any problem. This is where their little fantasy breaks apart. If a large corporation builds a factory near you and poisons your water supply, you just sue them. Okay. You win. How do you get them to pay damages and clean up? The police? They are too weak to enforce judgment because the regulatory and enforcement structure would be weak in a Libertarian system. They oppose taxes so there is no infrastructure except what groups of people and business put in.
Anyway, libertarianism isn't so much a disease. It is just a child's fantasy of "no rules".
Conservatism is the disease. Also grounded in certain fantasy, but more pernicious and damaging. Conservatives are typically authoritarians who look back to a time when "things were great" which they can never really specify. The reality is that conservatism is based in economic elitism and racism. They want a time when women and minorities had little to no say in society and where there was supposed opportunity in the "wilderness" for the White man, which was never really true in American history to begin with.
