The reason they get away with it is because the media keeps telling us they get away with it. Imagine if the media's take on tRump these days was that he is no longer getting away with it. Perceptions would change in an instant, followed by reality changing as well.

It's difficult to believe that our democracy is being destroyed by a bunch of obvious idiots, not by a group of clever, conniving super villains.

as far as that goes...they've just managed to leverage the low-information "conservative" base voters to their advantage.
