Why did Trump reply honestly to the reporter's question

about whether he told Putin to back off meddling with US elections?

He said that the subject didn't come up. He could have lied....lying is second nature to him, like breathing. He told the truth and all the flags went down on the field for me.

Does anybody have any ideas as to why he did that?

2. My fear is Putin told him he was on his own and Drumpf lied.

Putin wants chaos, so why not back the Democrat this cycle? Perhaps they will flip some votes in a way that will stick out enough so they will be discovered. Meddling in Drumpf's favor has a low probability of succeeding, so why not put a pall over the next administration? Please tell me I am wrong.
