Oldie but goodie---
I had business in the state capital and left my home in southern Illinois bright and early, headed for Springfield. I made it in about 3 hours and was making the last turn before the Capitol came into view when I noticed a young man---maybe 11 or 12---standing next to a cardboard box in the median. I couldn't help bu smile when I read his carefully lettered sign: "Republican puppies! $1.00 each!"
My business took several hours and, just after lunch, I was headed home when I again spied the young entrepreneur at the same location. This time, though, he had amended his sign: "Democratic puppies---$10.00 each!". Intrigued, I circled the block, parked and approached him on foot.
"Got to ask, man---are these the same pups you had here this morning 'bout, oh, 9:00 a.m. or so?"
"Yep, same ones" he responded, eying me with a mixture of suspicion and amusenent.
"How come they're now Democrats" I began, with a grin, "and they're so much more valuable?"
"Cuz, mister---they opened their eyes!" he exclaimed, throwing his arms wide to indicate that he was stating the very obvious.
I bought two.
