Dems see GOP effort to drive them to impeach Trump
By Mike Lillis and Cristina Marcos - 05/05/19 06:00 AM EDT
House Democratic leaders facing liberal calls for impeaching President Trump are confronting increasing pressure from an unlikely faction: Republicans who appear eager to goad them into it.
Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and her leadership team have repeatedly sought to defuse the appeals for impeachment hearings, deeming them premature, and some Democrats sense the Republicans are setting a political trap to boost their ally in the White House.
But recent stonewalling actions by the administration have only fueled the liberal push to oust the president, complicating leadership efforts to keep a lid on the campaign.
GOP leaders know impeachment divides Democrats, and see a clear political advantage in promoting the debate. The Republicans campaign arm is steadily blasting emails linking moderate Democrats in swing districts to the impeachment effort. And a growing number of GOP lawmakers are all but daring Democratic leaders to launch the process while it remains unpopular with voters a strategy not overlooked by top Democrats vowing to resist the bait.
If we get there, we will get there on our own time and our own way. We're not going to be baited into it, Raskin said.

(25,111 posts)Senate ain't gonna do nothing. And it would give them for fuel to run with the so called spying bullshit and HRC's e-mails.
Nothing concerning the issues that the American people are concerned about instead they will fuel more hatred.
Republicans hate the USA.

(7,142 posts)I know that impeaching Clinton gave Republicans the House, Senate, and presidency.
If the impeachment issue is dividing Democrats then maybe we better get started?
The only way that Trump wins in 2020 is if Democrats stay home. Trump can't win with his base alone. Not impeaching, IMO, will demoralize Democrats and decrease our turnout.
Holding hearings where we question empty chairs, waiting on the courts to enforce subpoenas, holding people in contempt of Congress and fining them with no one to enforce it is not going to make the Democratic base enthusiastic, is not going to make them turn out to vote.
Republicans are not playing defense. They are holding investigations into the crooked FBI, into Democrats who carried out a witch hunt against Donald Trump. Because Democrats are waiting for bipartisanship. Republicans are going to once again control the narrative with the help of the complicit M$M. The narrative is going to be that the Mueller investigation is over, it was a witch hunt, and the people who led the witch hunt need to be locked up. Hmm, sounds like a Republican campaign slogan, Lock Her Up.
If Democrats hold impeachment hearings they can counter the Republican narrative and put it back on the Mueller report and the Trump criminal enterprise.

(6,143 posts)when they should have won seats. The 2000 election was 2 years away from impeachment and the GOP had to steal it.
In 2007, the argument was made that not impeaching Bush would demoralize Democrats and decrease turnout. But in 2008, Dems won the Presidency and increased majorities in the House and the Senate.
