22. The connotation of the word has been evolving for some time and the...

denotation will probably follow in our lifetime. In casual conversation/writing, the word "guy" is transitioning to refer to any person when gender is unknown. Probably because the plural has already become a reference to any group of people regardless of the gender mix.

For example, when dropping off my son early for school this morning I overheard a teenage girl turn to three other girls and say, "are you guys coming or not?" The plural is already there. The singular is likely to do the same fairly rapidly. Still can sound awkward to our ears, but over the weekend my eldest referenced a favor a female friend did for him with, "yeah, she's always a great guy!" Maybe it doesn't sound so awkward to Gen Zs.

Now, in this case I wouldn't at all be surprised if it's an assumption the owner/driver of the truck is male. I just find our dynamic language fascinating and my feminist ears will be especially tuned in to this particular shift to see if my prediction is correct.

Trump has already changed the lexicon for American speech. "Shithole" has become an acceptable word in media, and even "pussy hats", that were named for his favorite place to grab, is ok.
