The Latest: Justice Department proposes Nadler talks

WASHINGTON (AP) — The Latest on Congress and the special counsel’s Russia probe (all times local):

2:40 p.m.

The Justice Department is proposing a meeting to reach an “acceptable accommodation” with the House Judiciary Committee after the chairman scheduled a vote to hold the attorney general in contempt of Congress for not producing special counsel Robert Mueller’s full report.

Assistant Attorney General Stephen Boyd proposed the meeting for Wednesday, the same day as the contempt vote.

The Justice Department released a redacted version of Mueller’s report on the Russia investigation last month.

But House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., issued a subpoena for the full, unredacted report and underlying investigative documents and set a Monday deadline, which the Justice Department did not meet.

Justice Department spokeswoman Kerri Kupec says the agency will “continue to engage in good faith” with the committee.

They could have proposed talks last week. They wait until the deadline and then offer to hold talks, which will go nowhere. Each move like this is another week or two off the calendar and closer to trump's objective of running out the clock.

And Barr needs to testify before Wednesday or the vote happens. Period.

What negotiation do they propose to offer against, "we are exercising our legal power of subpoena to demand the full report?"

It is time to issue citations and do whatever CAN be done to enforce compliance. Then order whatever is legal to those in contempt. I hope Jerry can figure out a way that makes it legal for SOME authority with teeth (Federal Marshals?) to cart off Barr and put him in a cell until he complies. If a week goes by with Barr yo-yo-ing back and forth between custody and freedom after Trump's inevitable pardons, after a week of that, THEN Congress will have their obstruction case, and impeachment proceedings can begin.
