Democrats are kicking impeachment down the road because they know they won't lose any of their base if they don't. Is anyone here going to support Trump or a 3rd party candidate if Democrats *don't* impeach Trump? I didn't think so.
And they aren't impeaching because they fear they would lose Moderates? Internal polling data must suggest it. Pelosi is out there saying caution and stay center.
So how is it that former Gov. Weld, a Republican running to Primary Trump, is saying that Trump is Impeachable? Please. Tell me, how the fuck did we get here?!?

(1,977 posts)That not one single person who didn't vote for Trump in 2016 is going to vote for him because he is impeached and not removed by The Senate. The exact opposite would happen. Impeachment is lose-lose for the GOP and for some unexplainable reason people are convinced of the opposite. We are in bizarro world for sure. The Senate refusing to convict would probably turn the Senate in 2020.

(86,330 posts)how I see it. If they do impeach and it goes no further in the Senate, I would think that would pour gas on the fire that will burn them out of office. I can't imagine that after hearing all the evidence impeachment hearings woluld reveal, anyone who is a true American would want them to remain in office. I am certain that the enablers will be outed and that's what they are thinking they can avoid for some reason.

(13,565 posts)Trump knows the power of that.
Pelosi is fooling herself.
Filing articles of impeachment will open the door to prosecutorial powers of investigation.
But the lagniappe is the presentation to the American people in their homes of testimony.

(86,330 posts)quite the same way. The public must be kept informed yet I think she is saying only what is appropriate for each step in the process. There is a certain set of actions that must be exhausted before the more drastic measures can/should be entered upon and I trust her implicitly to know which steps to make and when. Don't forget, we have an uncertain judiciary, that requires that every step be taken with the utmost care.
Madame Speaker has seen the impeachment rodeo before, I saw them all too, and it is a very treacherous path. Since she knows how everything in DC works, I trust that she will do what needs to be done. From what I've seen over the past week, her tone and language regarding impeachment is evolving... and I think we will be there soon. Timing is very important here... the next few weeks should be very interesting.

I wonder what internal polling said about Donald Trump in 2015.

(32,640 posts)and understanding of Congress.
Why would they need a speaker if a poll would be just as savvy?
I believe they tend to choose a speaker who is not planning to run for higher office, precisely so she/he won't be worried about popularity when they need to make strategic decisions.

(273 posts)People, it's call oversight and protecting the constitution. The numbers are already baked in. 55% of Americans say they will not vote for Trump and 62% of woman and 46% of men won't vote for him. We won the midterms by 9 million votes. It is the job of Congress to impeach when warranted. If it isn't warranted now, when is it? Republicans and Trump are trying to run out the clock. I don't care if impeachment fails in the Senate. How many Americans do you think are on the fence about voting for Trump? I thought so, very few. We have a Attorney General who is acting like Trump's own lawyer. Republicans are laughing at the Democrats. They would of started impeachment hearing a long time ago. Democrats in Congress, GROW A SET and get these hearings started.

(2,785 posts)thought it was the safe political calculation to support the Iraq war, they were wrong then and will be wrong again if they don't impeach Trump. Sometimes doing the right thing without regard to the political consequences is actually the safe political calculation.
