Like maybe impeach him just several weeks prior to Voting Day?
Considering that the impeachment hearings would take a lengthy period of time, Trump could not possibly be acquitted by the Senate until after the the elections were in the books, right?
I think that would work greatly in our favor since Trump would have the official tag of "Impeached President" throughout the critical part of the campaign with no chance of being acquitted by the Senate until after the elections were over.
If Comey could ruin Hillary's chances just prior to a General Election, then why not ruin Asshole's chances just prior to 2020?
If for some reason that would not be a good time to impeach him, then when do you think would be a better time to do it IF we are to impeach him?

(66,316 posts)Drag them out through the entire election process so Trump has to campaign with this around his neck. The more the hearings turn up, the more his bleatings of 'No Collusion!' will sound hollow to anyone left who has two brain cells to rub together. It may energize his demented, shit-slinging base, but it will also energize ours, and ours is bigger.

(22,236 posts)Exactly what I'm thinking as well. The most important aspect of impeaching him at a time when he couldn't be acquitted until after the elections is that the word "Impeached" would be like an albatross around his neck because "Impeached" would be perceived as "Guilty" to so many voters out there who might have been thinking of voting for Trump.

(525 posts)Would then hold a quick trial, find Trump to be Not Guilty and Trump then gets to campaign just before the election on his vindication. A Bill of Impeachment in the House is nothing more than an indictment, a statement of charges. It is the trial in the Senate that determines guilt or innocence. Just ask William Jefferson Clinton.

(90,335 posts)... the impeached have never ever fared well in elections post impeachment.

(525 posts)When has he ever played by the rules? The nuclear option on an impeachment trial would be in play to bend Senate rules and procedures.
Just a month before impeachment in 1998 the Democrats gained 5 seats in the House when the party in power usually loses seats in a mid-term election. Bill Clinton got his highest ever job approval rating the week that he was impeached.
I am not saying Trump shouldnt be impeached. Im saying that the politics of impeachment are unpredictable.

(90,335 posts)Saying democrats lost by a little less this time...isn't a convincing position.
There's been no net positive post election outcome for the party of the impeached since Johnson.
Impeachment has never been a net positive

It will take time for the effect to become significant, so it's important to get the process under way as soon as possible.

(22,236 posts)because if the impeachment was started fairly soon before the elections, there is no way Trump could be acquitted in time for an acquittal to have any negative effect on the elections, while the perception of impeachment hovering over his head during the elections would have nothing but a positive effect for Democrats.
