Happy 98th birthday, Sophie Scholl...
...the young woman who was executed by the Nazis for her work in the White Rose, a group of students who tried to rouse public opinion in Munich against the Nazi regime and its crimes. It's good to think of her sometimes, when the struggle gets to seem overwhelming. The courage she showed dwarfs anything we can imagine. I like to imagine sometimes an alternative universe, one in which Adolf Hitler died in World War One...a universe in which Sophie and Anne Frank knew each other, and possibly even collaborated together on a novel...
