Fresh off the heels of passing one of the most restrictive abortion bans in the country, lawmakers in Ohio seem eager to continue chipping away at abortion access.
Enter Ohio Rep. John Becker, aka This Fucking Guy: a Republican who has sponsored a bill that literally defies science. In defending his bill, Rep. Becker has claimed that contraceptives cause abortion (they dont) and that ectopic pregnanciesin which the embryo implants somewhere other than the uterus, usually the fallopian tubecan be fixed by simply sticking the errant embryo back in the pregnant persons uterus.
That is not something that can be done. The medical technology does not exist.
This is some VERY scary stuff. In this new round they want to make most birth control illegal. If it blocks a fertilized egg from implanting in the uterus, they call it an abortion. I'm past my reproductive years, but I fear for the generations of women behind me.
I know this sounds crazy and over the top, but at this point in our country I can see Handmaid's Tale from here. And it terrifies me.

1. It is 100% impossible to move an embryo from the Fallopian tube to the uterus. Technology does not exist. 2. Birth control pills PREVENT implantation. They do NOT cause abortions. Just stop it. You're putting women's lives at risk with these ramblings. Just stop.

I also fear for the generations of women behind me who have the most to lose. My best friends daughter was just treated for an ectopic pregnancy last December. If this unmentionably cruel policy was in effect, she could have died. Its total insanity!

Threadreader app-Hi @BeckerGOP, Im a practicing ob-gyn and researcher on abortion and contraception, and thought you might want some help understanding ectopic pregnancy since your bill (HB182) gets some things wrong. Ill clear up a few things in this thread.
An ectopic pregnancy occurs when the pregnancy implants outside of the uterus, most commonly in the Fallopian tube (thats the little tube that carries the egg from the ovary to the uterus). Rarely the ectopic pregnancy can develop somewhere else like the cervix or the abdomen.
Somewhere between 1-3% of pregnancies are ectopic. Based on that, I estimate that at least 2,000 Ohio women have an ectopic pregnancy each year.
Unfortunately, ectopic pregnancies cannot continue to a ive birth. If untreated, as a pregnancy grows, the Fallopian tube (where 96% of ectopics develop) gets stretched to the point of rupture & can cause massive bleeding. 4% of maternal deaths are related to ectopic pregnancy.
Luckily, there is treatment for ectopic pregnancy, including medication & surgery. This treatment is very effective & allows women to retain fertility so they can get pregnant in the future if they want. I was concerned to see HB182 removes insurance coverage for this treatment.
Unfortunately, an ectopic pregnancy cannot be reimplanted into the uterus. We just dont have the technology. So I would suggest removing this from your bill, since its pure science fiction.
Your bill is dangerous on many levels, @BeckerGOP, since it creates even more obstacles for patients seeking safe abortionespecially for women of color and those with low incomes.
While were in the middle of a maternal mortality crisis, it is unconscionable to consider placing obstacles in the way of treatment for ectopic pregnancy. Thanks for listening, @BeckerGOP, and feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

Becker claims to be the most conservative politician in the Ohio legislature.[5] He introduced bills in 2013 to allow state employees to carry guns on the job in most state buildings and to prohibit law enforcement agencies from destroying firearms confiscated by the police.[6]
In 2003, before his election to the legislature, Becker wrote a letter to the editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer pointing out that as Massachusetts had recently allowed same-sex marriage, the federal government to amend the Constitution to prohibit such unions, or failing that expel Massachusetts from the Union.[7] The previous year, in another such letter, he proposed allowing Alaska to leave the Union so that it would be free to produce more oil.[8]

.................Becker says the bill also speaks to coverage of ectopic or tubal pregnancies where the fertilized egg attaches outside of the womb.
Part of that treatment would be removing that embryo from the fallopian tube and reinserting it in the uterus so that is defined as not an abortion under this bill," Becker explains.
That doesnt exist in the realm of treatment for ectopic pregnancy," argues says Jaime Miracle, deputy director of NARAL Pro-Choice Ohio. "You cant just re-implant. Its not a medical thing."
She says, under this bill, women would have to wait until their very lives were in danger to get an abortion in the case of an ectopic pregnancy.
This bill will have grave impacts on Ohios infant and maternal mortality rates," Miracle says.......................

(11,563 posts)...they are EXTREMELY dangerous. My understanding is that, left to run their course, (and a pretty short one it is), it will almost certainly end in at least severe consequences for both the woman and the zygote, and a great chance of death and certain death for the two, respectively..

Maybe we should have some sort of science competency exam for the people who are making laws about human bodies or the environment.
I would really like to see medical organizations speaking out more strongly about issues like this.

(22,480 posts)They literally were not sure where the embryo implanted itself and thought that is could have gotten back into the ovaries somehow.
Whatever the fuck it was horrible. They caught it very early and I had to go to the doctor every other day to get a blood test to make sure it dissolved on its own.
Then they gave me a shot of Methotrexate which killed it.
Those GOP idiots can go fuck themselves.
Mersky
(4,981 posts)But if I had been pregnant, I would not have wanted to have it re-implanted. I couldn't have given consent to an experimental procedure either way, as I went into shock on the way to the hospital. I was serious in my studies at the time, was too young to care for a baby, and the human body can only take so much trauma at once.
When I awoke, I had one less ovary due to an ovarian torsion. The gynecologist who performed the surgery was extremely nice to me. Odd, because she looked like the same the doctor that yelled accusations that I must be lying about my nonexistent sex life and that it must be an ectopic pregnancy. Why did she wait for my blood pressure to drop to send me to imaging, more than 24 hours after being admitted? Some explanation about watchful waiting is all I got from her. Delay and doubt can be deadly in these emergencies.
Luckily, I survived the bleeding out into my ovary, and her judgment, as she ultimately saved my life.
These types of events are complex, and I am unnerved that any legislator thinks it is appropriate to interject his false morality and junk science into decisions made between patient and doctor.
