The end of the Tomato Suspension Agreement between the United States and Mexico could cost you at the grocery store. On Tuesday, it was announced that the United States would begin imposing a 17.5 percent tariff on imported Mexican tomatoes, which could leave to increased prices and shortages.
This new tariff marks the end of the Tomato Suspension Agreement, which existed between Mexico and the United States for 22 years, before the Trump administration put an end to it, according to the Washington Post.
In addition to signifying a continued straining of U.S.-Mexico relations throughout Donald Trumps presidency, the new tariff could result in higher price tags at the grocery store.

(36,427 posts)I run three varieties just to mix it up: A Hairloom (my bastard clone killer beefsteak), a San Marzano Roma for sauces, and a Cherokee Purple that DU tomato guru, NRaleighLiberal swears by, but truth be told, my bastard beefsteak just plain tastes better.

(15,807 posts)Im on a pretty forested lot with exactly one patch acceptable for growing tomatoes. I plant more to get an acceptable harvest.
I have a San marzano that Im growing and its the one hybrid that Ive grown this year so not suitable for seed saving. The cosmonaut volkov beefsteak-ish tomato is good, though I was disappointed with the number of tomatoes per plant. Im giving it another chance this year.
I think I started 6 different types but only the San marzano will be canned.

(36,427 posts)It mostly goes directly into spaghetti dishes, but in the last few years a lot of it goes into Alan Alda's killer Pasta dish.
Alan Alda Pasta
1/2 cup olive oil
1 lb rigatoni
1 28 oz. can of tomato puree
1 14 or 15 oz. can of diced tomatoes in juice
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup shredded Parmesan cheese
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place uncooked pasta in a large bowl. Add oil and stir until well coated. Let stand for 20 minutes.
Add tomatoes to pasta mixture. Season with salt and pepper to taste. Stir to combine.
Transfer to a 2 1/2 quart baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake for 60 minutes, stirring 1/2 way through.
Remove from oven, sprinkle with cheese, and stir to incorporate. Serve immediately.

due to his tariffs. I doubt it.

(35,301 posts)The claim is that Mexican tomatoes are essentially dumped, depressing prices for US-grown tomatoes, and that even with cheap imported labor domestic producers still had trouble making ends meet.
As for how it'll affect consumers, it depends on the terms of the tariffs. There were different prices for different categories of tomatoes--those to be sold fresh, specialty tomatoes, etc.
We also pay higher prices for sugar. And dairy. Because of price supports, many of which date back many, many decades.

(67,798 posts)They probably can't replace Mexico's production, but its would help. Presumably with no tariffs because they are the USA. Also might infuse some cash into their economy.

(15,807 posts)Going into the ground on Sunday. Im not much for grocery store tomatoes- theyre pretty darn tasteless.
Ill likely be canning a bunch this year too, as I expect anything with tomatoes in it will be gong up in price too.

(60,014 posts)I am pretty happy to start eating them when my first are ripe, and stop when my garden is done. Store bought, green house grown, etc not worth buying (to me - we are spoiled!). WE are pretty seasonal eaters, really.
I am working with a group a bit on breeding better flavored micro dwarf types.

(10,885 posts)I recall the first year I set up an outdoor vegetable garden. Had such poor soil that it cost a bundle to enrich it in order to grow, and had a very small return the first year. The garden became known as "The Home of the $24 Tomato".

(2,256 posts)No worries with power. Although the whole setup doesnt pull too much power. The grow light is LED and the ventilation is controlled by the programmable interface on the wall. It only turns on when temps or humidity go out of preset limits. The soil cost about $25 and another $5 for Miracle Grow Tomato plant food.

(2,256 posts)The tent is 4x6x7. The spare room is 12x12. I have a storage rack with multiple gallons of water on the lower shelves beside it. I unintentionally dropped the ductwork there when installing everything. The exhaust air blowing over the gallon jugs of water acts as an air cooler. Completely unintentional but works well. The room is about 8 degrees higher than the rest of the house.
