Presidents aides are pushing him to defy Democrats subpoenas
House Judiciary panel set to vote on holding Barr in contempt
President Donald Trumps advisers are pushing him to defy congressional investigations in hopes of luring Democrats into escalating a fight that they say will turn voters against the party in the 2020 elections.
The advisers are counting on news coverage of the battle with Congress -- including Democrats raising the possibility of impeachment -- distracting attention from candidates vying to replace Trump, and are portraying the president as a victim of partisan gamesmanship.
Democrats are playing into their script. The House Judiciary Committee on Wednesday is set to vote on holding Attorney General William Barr in contempt for missing a subpoena deadline to turn over an unredacted version of Muellers report. Trump advisers also see an upside from House Speaker Nancy Pelosis warning on Tuesday that the administrations defiance of subpoenas could lead to impeachment proceedings.
It wont turn out well for them, said Trumps campaign communications director Tim Murtaugh. The fact that Democrats want to continue the witch hunt shows that they have no interest in legislating and only care about politics.
Late Tuesday, the Justice Department told House Judiciary Chairman Jerrold Nadler that Barr would ask Trump to invoke executive privilege to prevent the unredacted report from being shared with the panel.

(11,736 posts)They appear to be deluded in their thinking. They seem to be thinking that Trump is charismatic like Bill Clinton and that the legal situation that Trump finds himself in is like Clinton's much ado about nothing, consensual affair.
What they fail to realize is that Clinton was investigated for 4 years by a prurient Ken Starr who after not being able to find ANYTHING of substance legally, turned to a salacious story about an affair with an intern. Clinton being like any other man caught "with his pants down" and being a slick lawyer, got cute with his answers about the affair and the Republicans on clearly political grounds pushed the narrative that he was not fit for office, likely knowing that probably upwards of 80% of the men who held the office have had affairs.
Trump has committed crimes, petty crimes, larger crimes, and very likely crimes against the United States. This is no Oval Office blowjob. He used hacked information and accepted assistance from a foreign government that has had an adversarial relationship with the US, to be elected. He also used the office to benefit himself or his cronies by selling favors to foreign governments. He hired staff who he knew had dealings with foreign governments to positions of sensitivity to our national security and only after being forced (or because they weren't corrupt enough) he terminated them.
As the information about Clinton came out, people were drawn in by the salacious details, but the overarching reaction was..."so what?" Clinton was seen as the victim of an attack over nothing.
As the information about Trump comes out, people (who may still not be paying attention) will start to see the depths of the corruption and what that has cost this country. We know that his followers will not care, but that is not who is important. The people who don't get involved until the last few months of the election will start to see all of the corrupt and dangerous things that Trump and his people have done and are doing, and that will be the narrative going into the election. Unlike the Republicans during Watergate, who finally said, "That's it, you have to go" to Nixon, they will also see how much these current Republicans have sold themselves to Trump and to those same foreign powers, and it will have repercussions down ticket as well.
Trump has been successful to a certain extent, in his career by using the Cohn strategy of just "being the biggest dick" about the situation and pushing to win, but that has been against smaller, weaker contractors and companies. I suspect he will not have the same success taking on the US Government in the long run.

(3,344 posts)The notion that an impeachment proceeding helps Trump is preposterous. A proceeding does nothing Democrats aren't already doing, except making it more likely judges rule in their favor.
Republicans do NOT want to have to vote against impeachment.

(16,784 posts)Democrats will counter with " HE is the one violating the US Constitution and the laws of this country. Trump is the one who thinks he is King, and thus above it all."
The more Democrats stress that who are running for office, the more people will be listening.

(7,142 posts)Trump has to win with his base because that's all he has and is all he will ever have.
Dems should have brought impeachment hearings before Mueller released his report, time is wasting.
