(115,656 posts)I ended up taking them to the food shelf collection facility myself. I'll probably do the same thing this year.

(9,426 posts)put that into a plastic bag. I attach the post card requesting the donations to the plastic bag, with a bread twist. Then I put the mailbox flag up and write a slip "Food on ground" so the mail lady sees it. Too much to put into the mailbox. The mail truck gets loaded!!

(115,656 posts)The bag was placed on a chair immediately below the mailbox. They couldnt have missed it two years in a row, but they did.

(31,950 posts)Canned beans, canned veggies, spaghetti, spaghetti sauce, granola bars, canned tuna fish. I watched my mail carrier take the bag.
I emailed my right wing sister to remind her about this and she replied, "They aren't doing that in my neighborhood." ??? I wrote back that it's national. Did not get a response.

(3,319 posts)It slipped my mind.
I filled up a grocery bag with canned goods and put it next to the mail box, just in the nick of time!

(50,825 posts)Then the money collected is matched from the Chapter's funds and sent to the Food Bank our local Letter Carrier's support in their drive.
Each dollar is equal to about 6 canned goods. So if we raise $200 and match it making it $400 that would be 2,400 canned goods or packages.

(21,549 posts)1. I got a card in the mail on Wednesday that the pickup was today. I shop every Sunday. in short they don't give me enough notice they're coming to prepare anything.
2. The local food bank has drives at my grocery store a few times a year where they give us a list when we walk in and i can buy stuff right there and give it to them on the way out. much more efficient way to run a food drive.

(42,279 posts)Most food pantries can do more with cash than with physical donations--they can buy more wholesale and get what they need. So please consider making out a regular check to your local food pantry. The same $$ you spend will go even further.

All basic, shelf stable stuff.

(32,078 posts)I don't always have enough on hand to fill up the bag, and I may not have a chance to hit the grocery store in the meantime.

(10,885 posts)From what I see in my neighborhood, not many participate. It's a shame...the USPS makes it so easy for most. Every bit helps someone, somewhere.

(22,562 posts)I was out there this morning, talking with my mail carrier, when it suddenly occurred to me--the food! I had put it in a box on the porch so I would not forget it and that's exactly what I would have done. But I even got a little thank you note for doing it.
