WASHINGTON North Carolina Sen. Richard Burr is not one to make a splash.
So when the Senate Intelligence Committee, which Burr chairs, issued a subpoena to Donald Trump Jr., it didnt leak out for a couple of weeks. When the news finally broke, Burr refused to talk about it.
That didnt stop the onslaught from fellow Republicans, including President Donald Trump who said he was very surprised by the move.
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul called it persecution of the presidents family. Even Burrs fellow North Carolina Republican, Sen. Thom Tillis, facing a primary challenge in 2020, tweeted Its time to move on.
-snip-
The subpoena is a courageous move for Burr, for the senator, because he knew that the angriest people would be members of his own party, Frank Luntz, a GOP pollster told USA TODAY.
It shows that he is pretty secure both in his position in the Senate and among his own voters, Luntz continued. He said even though Burr doesnt have to face voters at the ballot box he still will be a senator for the next few years. Burr is not seeking re-election in 2022.

Like many have said,it is all about getting reelected or saving their Egotistic Image.

(5,268 posts)His testimony was referred by Congress to Mueller/DOJ for consideration of prosecution for perjury. He has not been totally cleared and if he does testify and his testimony clarifies his actions and aligns with Mueller report, he will be immune from possibility of prosecution.
Trumper Republicans consider him a rising star- a future Senator and eventually President if he can be whitewashed sufficiently from the stench of his Russian collusion coverups. I will be quite surprised if he pleads the 5th.
