Former Massachusetts Gov. Bill Weld, who is challenging President Trump on the Republican ticket in 2020, believes the recent actions of the White House and Trump campaign resemble those of former President Richard Nixon's administration in the days before his impeachment.
"He's [Trump] says were just not going to comply with any of these subpoenas because theyre partisans," Weld told Boston Herald Radio's "Morning Meeting" on Saturday. "And that to me is the president really not living up to his responsibility as a co-equal branch of government. In fact, its the House and the Senate that are in Article One of the Constitution, so theyve got the primary power under the Constitution.
"I think the president is ignoring that as he and his campaign have made pretty clear in the last few days that their position is there is no primary, there is no election; we dont have to do anything and that harks back to President Nixon who was indicted and had to quit because of failure to take care that the laws are faithfully executed. Thats a core responsibility of the president and I dont see this administration living up to that one, not by a long shot," said Weld.
Weld, who was the running mate to 2016 Libertarian Party presidential nominee Gary Johnson, said he thinks Republicans are "almost daring" Democrats to move on impeachment proceedings ahead of the next election because they do not intend to honor the legislative branch's requests.

(7,408 posts)is just how far the GOP leadership has drifted from their 1974 status. Unlike then, there is no one left who will stand up to the runaway chief executive.

(6,042 posts)of last half century and is a branch that still has power to destroy but less power to advance a positive agenda.
Question is: can legislative branch pick up the power which in Hannah Arendt's words, is lying in the street.
If Congress is able to it can become a powerful democratic force for good-just as we are about to be hit by the equivalent of a perfect storm which climate change is about to unleash upon us.
At this point Trump seems determined to be a destructive force on the American economy and in many ways is hurting the Republican Party but is still helping Putin.
Prioritizing Putin over the party is making it clearer to many people that Russia is where his loyalty lies.
I continue to think that Republican Party is fracturing over Trump and he may well not be the candidate in 2020.
If Trump seems sufficiently weakened over the next months, Putin will back another horse in the rare for the presidency.

(7,715 posts)Richard Nixon was an incredibly smart person who loved his country. His problem was his hubris and his belief that only his way was the correct way.
That being said, while I am no apologist for Nixon, Trump is of a totally different category than Nixon. Trump has ABSOLUTELY no business being President. His massive business failures is just of the start of these reasons, coupled with his total lack of morality. He is a failure in EVERY respect, whereas Nixon, for whatever problems he caused, was self-made.
I WISH this was 1974, as I would be comforted to know that as despicable a person as Nixon was, he at least loved the US. There is NO way I can say this about Traitor Trump. I have no idea how much Trump will sell us out. That's the key difference between 1974 and 2019.

(7,408 posts)except I would describe Trump as having a "total lack of ethics of any sort" rather than "morality."
And, yeah Nixon was leagues smarter than Trump who is undoubtedly the dumbest POTUS we've ever had.
