Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez Says 'GOP Is Basically Dwight from The Office' After Bizarre Fact Check

Democratic Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez mocked Republicans Sunday, comparing her political critcs to Dwight Schrute, the overly fastidious fictional character from former sitcom The Office.

Ocasio-Cortez, a progressive who represents New York, called out members of the GOP on Twitter Sunday afternoon for failing to grasp sarcasm and humor, after some had fact-checked her for what she viewed an an obviously exaggerated comment.

On Saturday, the bartender-turned-legislator had tweeted that when she said "tax the rich" she meant the wealthiest of the wealthy — "For-profit prison rich. Betsy DeVos, student-loan-shark rich. Trick-the-country-into-war rich. Subsidizing-workforce-w-food-stamps rich" — she explained, noting that such wealth was so rate that the take would only impact "like 10 people."

Some critics responded to that tweet by taking the "10 people" figure literally, which Ocasio-Cortez called out Sunday.

“This is a technique of the GOP, to take dry humor + sarcasm literally and ‘fact check’ it,” the congresswoman wrote. “Like the ‘world ending in 12 years’ thing, you’d have to have the social intelligence of a sea sponge to think it’s literal,” she continued, referring to criticism of a previous comment she made regarding climate change. “But the GOP is basically Dwight from The Office so who knows.”

Oh am I ever familiar with that abuse tactic.

The MAGAts know she was being sarcastic. They took her sarcasm, pretended it to be truth (false pretense) then beat her up over it.

I set more than one asshole out by the curb for that kind of bullshit.

AOC sees right through it. Good for her.

Republicans for their evildoings and calls for control and redress, I'm hoping she's listened to by many previously unengaged or deluded members of the electorate.

Her inaccuracies are kiddish at best, yes, and sometimes to the point of being dishonest, and probably only work well with kids who are used to talking that way. Most Democratic voters are older, though. Hopefully over time she'll remember more of the figures she's read.

Btw, brief check of her very recent Twitter feed shows no criticisms of Democrats. Last time it was the same. .

I only checked one of her hostile anti-Democrat associates, her chief of staff Chakrabarti of Justice Democrats/Brand New Congress for a handful of days but aside from a few swipes at Biden, modest for him, nothing to note. It'd be interesting to know how much of that is him being smart versus, hopefully, her requiring this new tone while he works for her. Wouldn't it be funny if being inside the seat of Democratic Party power "corrupted" his conviction that it was wholly corrupt and must be replaced? Never a rational conviction, so not counting on that, though.

In a standard rotation she took Pelosi's gavel for a few minutes the other day, making her the youngest woman to preside.

so they would like to continue the status quo. They feel it's fine if lots of people get screwed over so a few wealthy entitled assholes can get wealthier.

When Trump repeatedly talks about jailing or killing his political opponents, it's "Just a joke, you humorless libtards!" Then, when some of Trump's more zealous fanboiz try to put his despicable words into action, Republicans excuse the mayhem by telling the libtards that they were given fair warning, but chose to ignore it.

How many times has Huckabee-Sanders fallen back on "he was joking', 'it was sarcasm' to excuse Trump's "humor"? He says something cruel, but it's supposed to be a laugh line at his rallies, as he thinks he's Don fucking Rickles.

I recognize the difference, but this is not a binary issue - deliberate exaggeration and ironic humor are minefields for pols.
