Sen. Lindsey Graham advises Donald Trump Jr. to ignore Senate subpoena

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., the chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, says Donald Trump Jr. should ignore the subpoena issued to him by the Senate Intelligence Committee.

“If I were Donald Trump Jr.’s lawyer, I would tell him, ‘You don’t need to go back into this environment anymore,’” Graham said in an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on Sunday. “‘You’ve been there for hours and hours and nothing being alleged here changes the outcome of the Mueller investigation.’ I would call it a day.”

Last week, the Republican-led Senate Intelligence Committee subpoenaed Trump Jr., the president’s eldest son, to answer more questions about his contacts with Russia. Trump Jr. is reportedly resisting the subpoena and may invoke his Fifth Amendment right to refuse to answer questions.

The panel is seeking to question Trump Jr. about congressional testimony he gave in September 2017 about a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow — testimony that was later contradicted by former Trump attorney Michael Cohen.

Advising someone to ignore a subpoena should be grounds for a bar grievance.

There is no way a state bar association would change their standards of practice for this. He should be disbarred. And he should be used as an example for others.

Donald Trump Jr. is balking at answering more questions about the June 2016 Trump Tower meeting and the pursuit of a Trump Tower Moscow project, two sources familiar with the matter told CNN, setting the stage for a clash with the Republican-led committee amid pressure from both parties over the subpoena to President Donald Trump's eldest son.

Senate Intelligence Chairman Richard Burr, who signed off on the subpoena to Trump Jr., told his colleagues that the panel has been engaged in talks with Trump Jr. since last December, and that he had agreed to voluntarily be interviewed on two separate occasions before backing off, according to sources familiar with the matter. That move prompted Burr and Democratic Sen. Mark Warner to ultimately issue the subpoena for his testimony, after Trump Jr.'s legal team objected to the scope and breadth of the planned interview, according to one source.
