Names and Locations of the Top 100 People Killing the Planet

“The earth is not dying, it is being killed, and those who are killing it have names and addresses.” – Utah Phillips

“Just 100 companies are responsible for more than 70% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions since 1988. The guys who run those companies – and they are mostly guys – have gotten rich on the backs of literally all life on Earth. Their business model relies on the destruction of the only home humanity has ever known. Meanwhile, we misdirect our outrage at our neighbors, friends, and family for using plastic straws or not recycling. If there is anyone who deserves the outrage of all 7.5 billion of us, it’s these 100 people right here. Combined, they control the majority of the world’s mineral rights – the “right” to exploit the remaining unextracted oil, gas, and coal. They need to know that we won’t leave them alone until they agree to Keep It In The Ground. Not just their companies, but them. Now it’s personal.

Houston tops this list as home to 7 of the 100 top ecocidal planet killers, followed by Jakarta, Calgary, Moscow, and Beijing. The richest person on the list is Russian oil magnate Vagit Alekperov, who is currently worth $20.7 billion.

The map is in the form of a cartogram which represents the size of countries by their cumulative carbon dioxide emissions since industrialization.

This map is a response to the pervasive myth that we can stop climate change if we just modify our personal behavior and buy more green products. Whether or not we separate our recycling, these corporations will go on trashing the planet unless we stop them. The key decision-makers at these companies have the privilege of relative anonymity, and with this map, we’re trying to pull back that veil and call them out. These guys should feel the same personal responsibility for saving the planet that we all feel.”

Never a bad thing to put a face on those who are polluting so many people, so many environments, and so much thought.

These people are going to, out of pure necessity as well as a matter of common justice, get shaken down.

It seems amazing that DU needs reminding of that. No, the top 100 companies are not the top 100 people. It's ridiculous to blame 1 person for Chevron.

More than that, we need to remember that its the consumers of these companies' products who are to blame. With a very few exceptions, that's all of us. This "map" is worse than useless. It's an excuse for consumers to not take responsibility.

I drive a SMART car.
And man do I ever get bashed and ridiculed for it in my relatively rural area.
There are only a few who are starting to look at their children differently... who will be suffering the consequences of their driving a ridiculous beast-mobile to haul one fat ass to work, two bags of groceries home.
Except, of course, those who won't shut off Fox Noise.

reap great benefit from them, and usually avoid or evade paying taxes.

The rest of us just have little choice but to go along with it, as a simple matter of survival.

Where are all the women polluters? Are they too poor or too subjugated to make the list? Do they care more about the future of the planet? If more women were in powerful positions in govt and industry would the planet be polluted as much?

The Russpublicans, the corporate talking heads, and James Comey did unspeakable acts to make sure Hillary Clinton wouldn't ascend to POTUS.

The world would be a better place for it, just as you have eluded.

... a quick scan I don't see Tech. Tech devices use all those rare minerals that must be mined--destroying forests, especially in Africa, to do it. No?

And what about big Agriculture---clearing forests, poisoning the food chain, putting hormones into the water supply which destroys the natural eco-system.

Even fast fashion plays a huge role---poisons rivers (dye run-off) and landfill garbage.

Will go deeper into the map later---hope it's all there and it's just my having to rushing that I didn't see the full monstrosity of what's happening.

world. His denial of climate change science, his failure to lead, removing America from the Paris agreement, his constant denigration of alternative fuels, his support of polluters, and his views of carbon fuels make him a threat to the survival of our species. He doesn't give a damn about science, about facts, about human lives.

He is holding the rest of the world back from making progress on climate change. IMO, the long-term impact of Trump as president will result in more suffering and more deaths than the history of wars put together.
