Allies hunker down in Iraq, drop out over US tensions with Iran
By: Kyle Rempfer ? 17 hours ago
U.S. allies involved in operations in the Middle East appear uninterested in the increasingly bellicose rhetoric from the White House and Pentagon regarding Iran.
Germany and the Netherlands suspended military training operations in Iraq due to increasing regional tensions, a Spanish frigate was recalled from its voyage with a U.S. Navy carrier strike group and a British general was sharply rebuked by U.S. Central Command after telling reporters that Iranian-backed militias in Iraq and Syria did not pose an increased risk to U.S. and coalition allies fighting the Islamic State.

European allies voiced concern this week that the tensions could accidentally trigger a conflict after the Pentagon dispatched a Patriot missile defense battery, a bomber task force, an amphibious transport dock and a carrier strike group to the region.
We are living in a crucial, delicate moment where the most relevant attitude to take the most responsible attitude to take should be that of maximum restraint and avoiding any escalation on the military side," Federica Mogherini, the European Unions diplomatic chief, said Monday.

(6,221 posts)agree to fully fund this invasion like Iraq?
few elected democrats want to be seen as less than fully patriotic during an election season.
but do you think this will come to a vote? trump can claim that an iran war is already approved by the 2001 authorization to use force.
remonder - democrats who opposed the "authorization to use force" in 2002 have been shown by history to be the actual patriots.

(6,221 posts)After the Iraq invasion was shown to be based on lies and the people that voted for it showed horrible judgement, there was zero push back on fully funding the debacle.

(7,142 posts)What makes people think that Democrats will vote differently the next time?
When Tulsi Gabbard was opposed to ousting Assad in Syria, it ruined her political career even though the situation in Syria was almost the same as it was in Iraq. Politicians will vote yes for war or they will be attacked the same way Tulsi was attacked.

(4,407 posts)despite my promise to myself at the time, for someone who voted yes on the Iraq resolution. This time I will not. Period.

(7,142 posts)should do something, stop honoring Trump's sanctions on Iran. Iran has not violated the peace agreement, the U.S. did. Trump is pushing Iran into economic ruin hoping they will respond in a way that will give us an excuse to go to war.
There is no one who I see who will stand up to King Donald. Maybe we should wait and see if things get better?
Obviously Trump will have a Secretary of Defense who will be no mad dog Mattis. He is getting ready to fire FBI director Wray and replace him with another cronie. 1 in 6 federal judges have now been appointed by King Donald.
Maybe we need to write a meaner letter?
Even if a judge rules against Trump I don't for a minute believe that Trump will comply. Everything is going to gey delayed until after the election when Donald will get his crown.
