Sounds divine although Brrrr!

(17,984 posts)However, I did go swimming on the opposite side of Ireland a couple weeks later. That was in the middle of the afternoon when the sun was out. Made all the difference in the world. That swim lasted a long time and was enjoyable!

(535 posts)It's why I come to DU, there's a besieged mentality for liberals on this side. It'd be nice to live among the like-minded. Living and working surrounded by trumpers makes optimism difficult.

(103,856 posts)It is conservative (ugh), but the people I have met are wonderful.. We just do not talk politics..I get all the politics I need at DU and we are not far from the pricey areas where marches and protests abound.. It's very cheap to live here, and it's a cute little town..
We came from the Riverside area of SoCal, and I feel more at home here than I did there after 35 years there..
When you go househunting, stop in..I'm about a mile off the I-5..and love company

(535 posts)I love the natural beauty of our state, I just need to go to a part of it where the people hold less ugly views. Over here in Spokane I'm that one liberal the R's immediately around me know, and they do so like to test out their faux noise talking points on me. It gets real old real fast.

(103,856 posts)We landed in Portland, picked up a rental car and headed north..Started in Sequim..over to the Ports (Ludlow, Angeles, Orchard etc) then to Hoquiam/Aberdeen (insanely cheap, gorgeous houses but soooo depressing) Montesano was rather charming, but too small.. Shelton was cute but the floodiness of the area scared us.
then down the I-5 . then we headed west.. the "wester" we got, the less we liked it..climate, vibes etc).. We narrowed our search 3300 miles later to the I-5 corridor Longview,north.. Our agent asked us if we were interested in looking at a house in Centralia..He was curious about the HUGE house for so little money..We said yes and we bought it.. 3224 sq ft up and 3224 sq ft down..1/3 acre in town.. built in 1946..
The downside is that my husband died last Oct so now it;s just me and 3 old cats rattling around the place..
I only use 3 rooms and 1 of the 5 baths..but hey..I finally got my big house and I am happy here.. I applied for the low-income property tax forbearance, so that will help..
I have met many great people here and the neighbors check in with me often..
One of my sons lives in Seattle, and he's my official handyman

(535 posts)I'm sorry to hear about your loss. Three cats? My cat would never allow that much divided attention. Thank you for the location advice, I'll be sure to check it out. However the vibes are there, I'm sure they're preferable to those on the East side of Washington.
But tomorrow 4 of us are going to try Lincoln City
Oregon for 4 days.

(31,261 posts)And it has beautiful hotels right on the beach. Added bonus, a person can rent a mountain bike and bike into the nearby mountains, the whole state is bike friendly with roads well marked for bikes.
Yes, Washington State is great also, especially Seattle and lower Puget Sound. It is also a biking friendly state.

I live in WV. We're next apparently. The legislature is doing its best to make this the shittiest place in the country. We don't have guns on campus because there was a chance that *might* bring the NCAA's wrath upon us.

(31,261 posts)Big cities are loaded with culture and the oceanfronts are spectacular. Instead of going south, people that like Disney should go to Disneyland in California then visit Western Oregon and Washington, though Orlando Florida home of Disney World, is very liberal, it is just the whole of Florida sucks.

(2,343 posts)We got back Friday night. We stayed at a very pretty Marriott property...all villas. Decided to splurge after getting an unexpected and pretty nice tax refund frm state and fed.
It was a great trip with three days at the pool, great restaurants, and a fantastic (although expensive @ $172 for general admission for 2 adults and 1 child) at NASA. Plus, we spent two days at the Magic Kingdom. But, I was really surprised at the Magic Kingdom crowd. In two days, I saw 7 MAGA hats! We were following one up Main Street, and three different times, the woman (yes, a woman!) recieved positive comments!
You know how you can sense when you're in a MAGA-loving crowd? I definitely sensed it at Disney World. My wife and I suspect that maybe the cost of tickets had a way of filtering the crowds. It aint a cheap place to go to! A family of three for two days for the Magic Kingdom was $702.
Still , we loved our trip to Florida. It wouldnt be a bad replacement foe Alabama.
One other thing...airfare into Orlando was pretty good. Our timing of going in May no doubt helped.
