Trump asked the court to block the subpoena while the case was under appeal - meaning the documents would not have to be turned over while Trump's lawyers appealed the subpoena. Judge Mehta denied the stay, thus that the tax returns have to be turned over forthwith.

This is huuuuge.

It's a very well written, informative decision. I recommend everyone Read it better understand how all of this is working.

If Trump refuses to release tax returns quickly?
The executive branch has all the enforcing personnel. This is why we have elections to remove presidents like Trump. There are no appeals to election results.

that probably won't be necessary. The order is a directed to Trump. It's directed to his accounting firm. Italian likeli that they are going to defy the judges order and risk being held in contempt.

And, Trump's usual bluster and threats of lawsuit won't work and this instance because the accounting firm is legally obligated to follow the court order to turn over the documents, so Trump has no standing to sue them if they do so.

Judicial rulings are hard to enforce against executive branch.

Now if the judiciary employed a large military, it could easily enforce it's rulings.

And people don't defy them. I suspect that even Trump won't mess with them. And even if he wants to, his lawyers aren't going to cooperate because, among other things, he can't pardon a disbarment.

Remember Judge Sullivan ordering the Justice Department to turn the plane with the deported immigrant on it around? That's how judges roll.

Justice Dept on an issue which did not involve the POTUS directly. Some underling in DOJ is not going to risk ignoring a federal judge.

However the executive and the judicial are co-equal branches. I never understood how one branch can rule over the other. This ruling by judge Mehta and if it will be enforced, are going to be quite interesting to watch. We will find out very soon!

But neither the president nor the federal government are involved directly in this case. The judge ordered his accountant to turn over the tax returns.

The three branches check each other kind of like a version of rock, paper, scissors

Denied a stay to allow time for an appeal: records have to be released before an appeal plays out (iow, weak case). heh
