The Trump team is pushing to turn homeless shelters into a venue for bigotry and discrimination.
The Trump administration has announced a new rule that will serve as a green light to bigots who want to discriminate against homeless people who are transgender.
On Wednesday, the Department of Housing and Urban Development, led by Secretary Ben Carson, released a plan that would revise the Equal Access Rule to allow shelters to turn away the homeless simply because of their gender identity or orientation.
The prior rule, published in 2012 under President Barack Obama, ensured that shelters and other programs would not be able to discriminate based on these criteria.
Just the day before, while testifying before Congress, Carson lied and said the department was "not currently anticipating changing the rule."

(17,984 posts)Today, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) published a final rule ensuring equal access to many federally funded homeless shelters based on gender identity. The rule requires that shelters admit, house, and serve all individuals in accordance with their gender identity, including transgender people. Todays final rule builds off of nondiscrimination protections based on sexual orientation and gender identity issued by HUD in 2012.
No individual should fear discrimination when seeking shelter, particularly when taxpayer funds are involved, said HRC Legal Director Sarah Warbelow. Too many transgender people must choose between living on the streets or being mistreated in a shelter. This lifesaving rule will help more transgender people gain access to safe and affirming housing.
Transgender people face high rates of housing discrimination and homelessness. One in four transgender people report experiencing homelessness in their lives and nearly half of transgender people seeking emergency shelter have been required to be housed based on their sex assigned at birth. Those who stay in this housing face high rates of physical and sexual assault from other residents or shelter staff. https://www.hrc.org/blog/federal-government-guarantees-equal-access-to-many-homeless-shelters-for-tr

(17,984 posts)Someone over at the WH passed on the information, and Carson is totally oblivious (as usual.)
So, no, he did not read this information before coming to 'his' decision. He was just following orders like a good Nazi.

My guess is rightwing religious nut shelters would turn someone away, but they likely do that already under disguise. This new rule will only allow them to get into people's faces and openly show their hate while turning them away.
