U.S., Iran Conflict Intensifies Amid Talk of Troop Deployment

Senior officials in Tehran levied grave threats Thursday following reports the White House is considering deploying 10,000 new troops to the region.

"Our hands are on the trigger and we are firmly prepared to annihilate any aggressor and greedy eyes against the Islamic Iran," Chief of Staff to the Iranian Armed Forces Maj. Gen. Mohammad Hossein Bagheri said Thursday, according to the country's state news service. "The new conditions of countering the U.S. arrogant and pharaonic threat invite all the Iranians to enter the fields of jihad, full alert, and mobilization of more power."

Bagheri's remarks, in which he also commemorated the anniversary of a major battle during the Iran-Iraq War in 1982, follow aggressive rhetoric from both governments in recent weeks. Tehran continues to exploit international divisions over President Donald Trump's withdrawal from the 2015 nuclear deal and new hard-line approach. Meanwhile, the White House continues to deploy military resources to the region in response to what it's described as a new and deadly threat Iran poses to Americans and their allies in the region.

On Wednesday, U.S. defense officials speaking on the condition of anonymity confirmed to the Associated Press the Pentagon had prepared a plan to deploy as many as 10,000 new forces to the region to prepare for Iranian threats. Officials planned to brief the White House on Thursday morning and insisted the new forces were solely defensive – perhaps helping to build protective infrastructure or supporting other military resources already dispatched to the region.

inviting trump to do a military incursion may do some good. Iranian government officials are certainly better American patriots than GOP members.
