A Catholic bishop who was instrumental in creating California’s Proposition 8 same sex marriage ban was arrested for driving under the influence over the weekend — less than a day after the church insulted LGBT activists by naming him the Archbishop of San Francisco. According to KGO, Bishop Salvatore Cordileone was arrested in San Diego’s College District on Saturday morning just before 12:30 a.m. Salvatore, who has called marriage equality “the ultimate attack of the Evil One,” organized Catholic and evangelical leaders to back Proposition 8, a 2008 ballot initiative that enshrined marriage discrimination in the California state constitution.



Pope Benedict XVI announced on Friday morning that Cordileone had been appointed to serve as the Metropolitan Archbishop of San Francisco. The bishop recently told CBS San Francisco that the church would work to prevent equal marriage rights for gay men and lesbians.

“As I keep emphasizing, marriage between a man and woman is not against anyone,” he insisted. “Same sex marriage will have consequence detrimental to the good of society.”
