Donald Trump should consider going to therapy for his mental health, according to his friend Howard Stern.
From what I know of Donald and his relationship with his father, it sounds traumatic, the radio talk show host told CNNs Anderson Cooper in an interview, set to air on Saturday.
It sounds like the father was very domineering, the father expected a lot from him and military school. You read these drips and drabs and you go, Wow, I can assure you hes been traumatized, Stern continued. Donald, his level of narcissism is so strong and he has troubles with empathy, we know that.
Stern added, I wish hed go into psychotherapy. Id be so proud of him if he did. He would probably flourish.

(51,591 posts)He has several severe personality disorders which are very difficult to treat. Stern went into therapy for narcissism and it helped him a lot. He is older than most who seek help for these disorders but he really wanted to get better and he worked on it. The fucking moron is more than a narcissist, he is a malignant narcissist on top of being an incredible sociopath as well as a sadist. He doesn't want to get help and even if he did his problems are severe and probably would only have limited success with intense, ongoing therapy as a treatment.

(22,344 posts)go through. Therapy might make him a better person, and possibly even a better parent, but I'm pretty sure it's too late to make him a better president.

(15,286 posts)domineering parent? Trump was defective from the start.

(22,344 posts)What? Of course not. Is that how my post came across?
"Trump was defective from the start."
Could be. His childhood certainly didn't help him at all. If he had been raised by warm, loving parents of modest means, he would certainly be a different person today. Perhaps a run-of-the-mill psychopath, the way other presidents are described to be.

(10,177 posts)Not to put too fine a point on it, but folks spend too much time psychoanalyzing the asshole. Trump would have probably turned out to be the same self-absorbed, sadistic, lying, insane POS had he been raised by Ward and June Cleaver. Some people are just evil.

(41,963 posts)Well, a retired one. I dont think he can be helped now. He doesnt want to be helped. But his personality is as much a mix of nature and nurture as all of ours are. No telling how many possible permutations there are.

(11,738 posts)Trump at this point is likely unreachable. He lacks the insight or desire to do the work necessary for change. HOWEVER, it is possible to change at ANY age although it becomes more difficult as grow accustomed to the patterns of interaction and behavior in our lives. The keys are having a level of understanding that your choices and attitudes are not working for you, and the motivation to do the hard work it requires.
I think people mistake assessment for making excuses. Professionals do not analyze, assess, and diagnose people to make excuses but to try to understand and map out a plan to help that person change if they so desire.

But, you're both probably correct. Trump is a seething mass of psychoses in need of professional help. I guess Nancy was right: all he needs is an intervention, a little down time and some prayer.

(63,221 posts)I honestly believe he was born bad. From throwing rocks at the infant next door to his sociopathic activities as a child, I think some people just come into this world evil. His upbringing only exacerbated the problems that were already there. He is an un-redeemable POS and always will be. There is no fixing him or helping him. He is beyond help and will never change or become a better person.
He doesn't want to change. And wanting to change is the one thing that must be necessary in order to benefit from psychiatric help.

(9,245 posts)Therapy won't help because a malignant narcissist would never believe that they need it. Quite the contrary.
Psychopathy is a brain malfunction. Synapses are misfiring or not firing at all. fMRI would show this. Also subjecting him to the Hare Psychopathy Checklist would reveal some interesting data.
Therapy can't "cure" something that isn't curable. His mental issues are likely pathological - and in addition, his privileged childhood further reinforced them. That's the scientific explanation for what's wrong with him.
The more religious one is that he's just plain E V I L. That's why some people call him The Devil. If you believe in all that, satan was supposed to come destroy this place. And if there is such a thing going on, it's Trump.
Either way, "therapy" isn't going to fix it.
Trump is the kind of "person" you lock up in a padded cell with a straightjacket and a faceguard like Hannibal Lecter. Forever. He does not belong in civilized society. He is a danger to himself and the World. And too utterly full of himself and/or lacking empathy or a conscience to even give a fuck.
Therapy will NOT fix this.

(53,410 posts)not a psychological one. It doesnt happen because of abuse or childhood trauma. You are born with it. Maybe its a genetic disorder, but that still remains to be seen.

(5,164 posts)Would help a malignant narcissist, sociopath, traitor/ criminal and fascist. The emphasis on fascist and sociopath. He is insane as well in my mind. Just like it wont help others with similar problems such as his hard core followers. Plenty of people go through much worse and they do not end up like this, he is hateful, ignorant and a dangerous & deranged person imo.

Many many psychotherapists have advocated for Rump to get a transfrontal administered via icepick. Come to think of it, Nicholson's character in Cuckoo's Nest was playing crazy to stay out of prison, too.
Coincidence, no doubt.

(24,764 posts)and my opinion is that Trump is too far gone, largely because of his advanced chronological age*, to benefit from psychotherapy.
A younger narcissist might benefit slightly by behavior therapy, but a narcisistic and psychopathic senior, not so much.
*Chronological age, as opposed to emotional age, which never reached 1st grade.

(17,600 posts)Why any intelligent person would pay any attention to Stern, I have no idea.
I was lucky enough to be exposed to his vileness very early on in my awareness of his radio show. Not long enough to form any attachment to his humor, if that was even possible. Seemed to me he was shit-stirring in a horrible way that would cause people to get hurt. Turned him off and have avoided him ever since.
On edit because I clicked too soon: It is amusing that someone like Stern is trying to psycho-analyze someone like Trump. Falls under "takes one to know one"?
