(15,237 posts)I have theorized that some part of them knows how wrong they are about their views but they cannot help themselves from wading deeper. This happened to a close friend who ended up losing all of his friends and family. His brother blames it on Fox News and radical Roman Catholic Organizations.
Someone should do a study as to the causes.

(37,159 posts)Someone who was just going with the flow within a generally (and sometimes, supposedly) liberal environment is an easier mark for becoming disillusioned and switching rather than retaining the fundamentals but shifting some of the particulars.
Then there's people whose views basically revolve around personality traits rather than principles. I'm thinking of David Horowitz, who went straight from being a lefty radical in the 60s and 70s to right-wing radical, with no stop at "reasonable" at any point. He was always a foamer, he just flipped which direction he pointed his foam cannon at. (Didn't hurt that one direction pays a lot better.)
