Anybody else feeling that Dump & Co have sucked the emotion out of Memorial Day?
The joy out of being patriotic? I sing in a group and we do an amazing concert each Memorial Day weekend - patriotic music, a recreation of the Gettysburg Address, recognition of the audience members who served, and an ice cream social. It's our best attended concert of the year. Audience members are all ages, but the majority are between 55 and 80. I imagine a good portion are Trumpers, although I didn't see any MAGA hats this year.
It's one of the concerts I like the most because we have audience participation on some of the songs, and they really seem to enjoy it.
As I was singing today, there were a few songs that we performed that almost brought me to tears and I had a hard time singing through them -- the whole time thinking "That was America before Trump". The particularly difficult songs were "The Battle Hymn of the Republic", "God Bless America", "This Land is Your Land", "Blades of Grass" and "Testament to Freedom". Soooo, about half the concert.
If we don't take our country back in 2020, I probably won't feel able to perform that concert again.
I hate Dump and any freak who voted for him.
Not looking forward to July 4th celebrations. I'm pretty sure our director would ignore the suggestion of doing a concert of Resistance, Protest, and Hope (lots of PP&M, Seeger, Dylan, etc.) After all, they are as much a part of our history as other music.
