It's pretty scary when a political party in control of the Senate...

is determined to eliminate American democracy and rule of law in order to hand the country over to an insane despot.

Trump is not the real problem.
He would have been eliminated long ago but for the fact that Republicans are working hard to endow him with total, dictatorial control over our nation.

They are probably peeing their pants over dreams of the Democratic party totally neutralized and extremist Republican policies becoming the unchallenged law of the land.

They don't seem to realize that once the insane tyrant has total control over government, his alignment with Republicans will likely end and they will be forced to accept policies which do nothing but glorify their splendiferous leader while destroying the lives of millions at home and abroad.

They know the evolving demographics are against them. They are swimming against an unrelenting tide, so they have to fight back, and they are willing to fight as dirty as need be.

I don't think the Republican establishment wants Trump to stay as president any longer than necessary, they just want him to rubber stamp the policy changes they want imposed on the rest of us.

Some writer pointed out that the senators who voted to approve Brett Kavanaugh represented about 40% of the American electorate. They have the advantage in the Senate because of the way the body is set up, but there is no way in hell that Mitch McConnell's vision of America is shared by a majority of Americans.

Nine states in the middle of the country (MT, UT, ID, ND, SD, NE, IA, OK & KS) have collectively fewer people than the San Diego/Los Angeles metroplex, yet have 18 Senators, where the entirety of California has but 2. Until the portion of the constitution that allows this is changed, Republicans have a truly unfair advantage.

There are more liberals and progressives in this country than conservatives, but they have the upper hand at the moment.

Things are going to get a LOT worse before they ever start to get better, but I don't think it will come to a dictatorship.

The Republicans now are on the cusp of controlling the judiciary and with that they can control how laws are interpreted. If they keep control of the senate, and that is pretty likely, they can squash any and all progressive bills put forward, no matter how benign or benevolent they are.

I think one of the major problems at the moment is the continued drawing of breath by McConnell. He needs to die, either literally or figuratively. If the Senate gets back to being a reasonable body, with a reasonable majority leader, we might recover in my lifetime.

Otherwise, it will take generations to undo what Trump has inflicted on us.

I don’t think they’re actually destroying democracy for Trump. I think he’s the side show being used by the American oligarchy to distract enough people that they, the ridiculously wealthy, can push through their agenda.

This has been in the making for over fifty years. It has been the objective of the leadership of the Republican Party whose representatives are nothing more that the servants of the oligarchs. Each Republican president, with the support of their representatives, has supported the so-called theory of the Unitary Executive which is effectively will transform the presidency into a power little different than those of China, Russia and a growing number of East European countries such a Hungry, Poland, Turkey...

At present we have an Attorney General who has been a powerful advocate of the Unitary Executive presidency for over thirty years. It is well to not forget that Nixon, Reagan, both of the Bush presidents and now Trump have had no regard for the law. Their presidencies have been little more than criminal enterprises that have been increasingly protected by Republican legislators.

The hypocrisy of the Republicans is absolutely beyond the pale. If the nation is to survive as envisioned by the founders, it is imperative that the Republican Party must be destroyed. However, it will be formidable task since they control a massive propaganda network that has literally brainwashed an entire generation. Their message is simple. With the combined support of the religious extremists, they have cast anyone who opposes them as immoral jackals who are hell bent on the corruption of the youth. Their extremism has become increasingly shrill. This is coupled with the message that anyone who opposes them, especially Democrats, are unpatriotic enemies who must be defeated.

They alone are the true patriots and its up to them to save the nation. When this is juxtaposed against the philosophy of the founders of the democratic republic it is antithetical to the very concept of a transparent democratic government of the people, by the people and for the people. They are determined to go to any extent to suppress evidence of their gross disregard for basic decency and lawless behavior. It is a matter of survival for the Republic and the hard won freedoms that were won by the blood of our founders against tyranny. The nation has faced formidable challenges and has survived. Hopefully, the light of democracy will not be extinguished by mindless masses who are paving the way of their own enslavement.
