Fuck the Fresno GrizzliesThe lawmaker on Tuesday responded to a controversial video that the Fresno Grizzlies aired at Chukchansi Park with a Twitter thread explaining how her life has changed due to the flood of death threats that those kind of hateful messages inspire.
Ive had mornings where I wake up & the 1st thing I do w/ my coffee is review photos of the men (its always men) who want to kill me, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted.
I dont even get to see all of them, she added in a follow-up tweet. Just the ones that have been flagged as particularly troubling.

They embrace an ignorant fascist who assaults the free press and our rule of law, but make death threats against a young congresswoman who wants to ensure they have affordable health care and education.
That's what "patriotism" has become on the right.

(5,624 posts)on the taxpayers' dime, there should be funds to protect members of Congress from this kind of threat. (Remember Rep. Barbara Lee and her sole dissenting vote on AUMF after 9/11.)
I know Glenn Greenwald has lost a lot of credibility but he was spot on regarding Rep. Lee's bravery.

"For her lone stance, Lee was deluged with rancid insults and death threats to the point where she needed around-the-clock bodyguards. She was vilified as anti-American by numerous outlets including the Wall Street Journal. The Washington Times editorialized on September 18 that Ms. Lee is a long-practicing supporter of Americas enemies from Fidel Castro on down and that while most of the left-wing Democrats spent the week praising President Bush and trying to sound as moderate as possible, Barbara Lee continued to sail under her true colors. Since then, she has been repeatedly rejected in her bids to join the House Democratic leadership, typically losing to candidates close to Wall Street and in support of militarism. I documented numerous other ugly attacks when I wrote about her for The Guardian in 2013."

I think it is way past time for Twitter, Facebook, etc; to pull the cord on these idiots. First cord to pull would be their Hater in Chief, DJTrump, who is, sadly, our president.

(43,307 posts)don't produce any knowledge that they or women can use.
Isn't there a thumb nail explanation that can arm women like AOC? Or ANY woman in public life, for that matter.
And why are so much of women's resources -- tax money, reparative spending (medical, mental health help) on theirs and their children's lives -- spent on dealing with male damages?
Women have been dealing with the reality that men are not cost effective to anyone, which is probably why men like Trump have so much money to buffer all the damage they do. But that's everywhere, isn't it.
But why.

and Internet research could broaden and deepen her numbers and research, so it needs updating in all the categories of her thesis: that men, violence incurs costs to everyone and not just the victims
-- witnesses, spouses, children, society, medical, court costs and social costs in dollar terms.
To me, her book raised a real problem for women in this and other countries. But her book wasn't well received by male reviewers, predictably. I still have it somewhere in my women's studies collection.
In a final chapter she attributes the crimes she gives (for its day) well researched numbers for, to massive sexism, beginning with school instruction that emphasizes men's roles in history; and societal inculcations about "manhood" that prevent men from feeling empathy for others, along with the business world's presumptions that income inequality is women's problem and men's inherent right, since women have had little to no say about the public sphere, which men took over, for millennia.
Some of her solutions: Involve men more in daily child care; reduce media depictions of violence and access to guns. One suggestion that stood out to me is that men should pay an extra tax for their costs on society, which could then be spent, for examplein providing help for troubled boys, or to rehabilitate prisoners.
The general gist is that what less money women make is spent on prevention and clean up of damage men do to them and others in women's sphere or in public. Women pay disproportionate taxes toward law enforcement funding, or laws that restrict them, laws that they have little to no say in.
That's a more detailed look at what I meant.
We're still dealing with male outrage and simmering resentment that women expect "mere equality" without even having to work to earn it.
And so the currents across continents that women leaders like Hillary, AOC, or Malala Yousafzai, etc., have to swim against.

(4,516 posts)if you can't define it realistically?
Men are not your enemy. Right wing men, evangelical men, misogynistic men are your enemy. Not me nor my brothers.
It will take men and women working side by side to improve life.
ancianita
(43,307 posts)and the fact that you want to put that word in my mouth means that you see it, for whatever reason.
How do women know until it's too late who are the misogynistic men when they're "working side by side." Even my armed sisters in the military -- as equal an institution as it gets -- get raped. Explain that, if you can.
I call it the "ambush." It's a key to winning a contest in a game against equality -- in the name of "manhood" or ego -- that men lead women to believe they're not even playing.
Your platitudes ring hollow in the face of the history between men and women, much of which men have erased or given "official" explanations for in their versions.
When you read more statistics about male predations and crimes, you can see how "realistic" you yourself are about your brothers. A start:

(43,307 posts)one asking for men to explain the AOC male problem.
All I get are platitudes that seem like social dogma: that's just the way it is. Some things will never change ... as the song goes.
Here: Where's the brothers' responsibility to sisters to even try to answer their questions.
In Washington: in the face of AOC's daily death threats, all that's done is to bleep out the accounts of the threateners, not to send out police to arrest them for assault with intent to commit murder. That would cost taxpayers and cops time and money, right? But rich men like 45 get our taxpayer paid Secret Service to do their dirty work every damn day.
Those are three examples of the "realistic" cost effectiveness I'm talking about.

(15,426 posts)All of us are lucky she chose to become a public servant.
You should be mindful that AOC is only 29 years old, and the Constitution sets forth the rule that a president must be 35 years old.
She has a great future and is in there slugging now. You know what I find really cool about her? She isn't afraid of losing reelection. She's in there to serve, and goes by her inner lights, not what polls say. I saw her on a video and she was telling young people to run for office. She said, "You know what? If you only get to serve one term, so what?"
I wish they all had her kind of courage, because my grandkids need that Green New Deal NOW, and I'm still disgusted with the Senate for voting 'present.' Oh, it was explained to me at length why that was the 'wise' thing to do...but my grandkids need the Green New Deal NOW.

My sister-in-law and her wife, who live in Fresno, voted for Devin Nunes. Yes they are gay and vote for wing nuts. Basically they don't know any better. They are not very political but are influenced by their co-workers.
One of them is a teacher and thinks Nunes supports her union. That's what she was told. I asked her to research these politicos and see for herself but I have no effect. It's Fresno.

It is truly ironic that these MAGAt men have been so brainwashed by their "fearless leader" that they are being used as tools by him and are willing to go out and kill a lawmaker who is truly fighting to help them live a better life.
